First time Coast to Coast August/September 2014

First time Coast to Coast August/September 2014 - 18/01/14 10:02 AM

So finally I'm going to be walking the C2C this year and really can't wait. I've no idea why it's taken me so long to get round to it, maybe a wee bit of bias to trekking in Scotland. Anyhoo, a question I have is whether anyone would recommend Grosmont over Egton Bridge or vice versa. I've read a lot about Grosmont being a great last night on the walk whilst then reading pretty poor reviews about the atmosphere and food in the station tavern. Egton Bridge looks good with three good pubs, but does it have the atmosphere from walkers on their last night on the C2C? Any suggestions/advice would be much appreciated.

I stayed at the Station Tavern in 2006 and the food was great, Whitby cod - my only complaint would be that the plate awsn't big enough! As we wanted to leave very early in the morning (about 05.00 from memory), as the guy I was walking with had to get a ferry to get back home, they left food out so that we had the run of the place.

Have you been back since, for a pint or a meal?

I only have experience at Grosmont (2010), but I would recommend it. We stayed at Grosmont House B&B, but ate at the Station Tower. Both were fine. We also enjoyed seeing the train shed.

An additional advantage, for me anyway, is that Grosmont makes a shorter last day. Even from there we were pretty much beat by the time we got to RHB, almost to the point of not being able to enjoy our triumph. The extra distance from Egton Bridge would have just made it worse.

I've stayed at the Station Tavern twice and both times I was very pleased with it. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room was good, and the food was good. The atmosphere was good as well but both times I've stayed on a Saturday night so it was full of local people - there weren't many groups of coast to coast walkers.

No I haven't as I don't live local however if I were to do the C2C again I would happily stay there again - subject to any recent comments. However I am easily pleased!

Just a suggestion of another place to stay. We stayed at Intake Farm, Littlebeck. Depends on your schedule as it's 4/5 miles further on. We had walked from Blakey Ridge but had had a short day the day before. It leaves you with a nice short walk into Robin Hoods Bay! When you arrive Judith sits you down in the kitchen for home made cake and tea, and everyone sits around a big table for dinner. There were around 10 people when we were there including some who were camping there so a great atmosphere with lots of stories to tell by then. It was one of our favourite places to stay.

That sounds fantastic and love the idea of the shorter walk into Robin Hoods Bay. However I'm not sure our feet would take it as we have Richmond to Ingleby Cross, then Ingleby Cross to Blakey Ridge. Another big one might just finish us off ha ha.

Although quite happy to add an extra day rather than two nights in Robin Hoods Bay so I guess a possibility could be Blakey Ridge to Glaisdale, then Glaisdale to Littlebeck (for a short short day).

I also loved staying at Intake Farm, the welcome around the kitchen table with cake and coffee, the family style dinner with hosts and guests, and a large room with very comfortable bed.

I made a point of scheduling a short day from Glaisdale so I could ride the steam train to Goathland from Grosmont. Well worth the time spent if you love trains as I do.

Blakey to Intake Farm is 16.5 miles. It is fairly easy going with only the hill beyond Grosmont to contend with. As I recall, it is about an hours walk from Grosmont to Intake ( Judith gives you directions for a short cut from the Sleights road).
I agree, she is a lovely pleasant woman and the food and ambience is great. You cannot get a drink however ( possibly on religious grounds). When I last did this leg I got to Intake about 4.00pm.
The following day is 11 miles getting you to RHB by 1pm approx.
These two days are a nice easy finish.
The pub in Grosmont is ok but a bit down at the heel these days. Stopped there for a toastie en-route from Blakey to RHB on my last day; in August last year. They were very friendly but not a walkers pub.

We're walking out 3rd Coast to Coast starting on May 7th from St Bee's. Really can't wait, but with regards to this topic many have got it spot on, Grosmont is a lovely place, but not great in the eveining, last time we walked in 2012 we walked back half an hour or so to the Horse shoe Inn, well worth it and a great welcoming atmosphere. So we're taking the hit this year and staying at the Horse Shoe Inn, it means a longer last day, but never mind, we'll worry about that in a few weeks.
Enjoy your walk !

Two years ago myself and two friends stayed at Grosmont House. We considered it the best place on the whole walk. The dinner (book in advance) was great.
I have also stayed at Horse Shoe on two other solo crossings. It was OK but nothing special - the single room(s) were a bit pokey.

Thanks everyone. I decided on Egton Bridge in the end. All booked up now, starting 23rd August; really can't wait. Seanaldo, enjoy your trip, you'll no doubt be heading of on your first day shortly.

Frustratingly in the past 6 months, 3 discs have slipped in my back so I feel like I'm forever in recovery. Walking certainly helps albeit I'm much slower than I'm used to. I shan't let it stop me from doing the walk but it does mean I won't be able to carry my own bags. Any recommendations for which is the best transfer service or is it a case of six and half a dozen?

Whilst currently I carry all my own gear when it comes to the time to ease my load I will use the services of this website. They continue to give us the opportunity of exchanging ideas at some cost to themselves especially when the occasional troll (or whatever they are called) upsets the smooth running of the site.

I used Sherpa Van in 2010 and was very pleased with their service.
