Clwydian Rangs. - 20/10/08 07:12 PM

On Sunday I was up in the Clwydian Hills in the area of the Jubilee Tower to watch the British Fell Running Relay Championships. Although it was very windy and cloudy the rain kept at bay. Jaw dropping, seeing how those world class elite runners climb those very long and steep fell sides and their hellish rapid descents, getting to the finish after 9 miles, before many good class club runners have got a third of the way round.
Being on the Offa's Dyke route again for the first time since I did it around 9 or 10 years ago, got me wanting to do it again. So it may be on for next year.

Slogger... what route does this event follow? I walked from Bodfari to Clwyd Gate last year and was wondering if these people ran up Moel Famau via Moel Arthur, which I found to be tough enough to do walking!

Canmal,
The start was from a farmnear Llangynhafal close to Fron haul, which is marked on the guide book. They ran straight up the incredibly steep ridge onto the OD route just South of Moel Dywyll, then ran North on the OD past Moel Dywyll dropped off down to towards Garth to the East then climbed back up to arrive at Moel Fammau, continued on the OD South for 1.5 miles before turning West down a ridge towards Fron Beliaf. Just before this place they turned North again to climb the even steeper ridge up to the summit of Moel Baer, dropped steeply down off that to the North and straight up back onto the first ridge they started on, but upon meeting it this time turned downhill to the long descent and finish.

Slogger..that's pretty humbling!I have no idea how these people get that fit. I have been trying all summer to get fit enough to ride my bike a couple of miles without stopping up a steep hill near me.When I mentioned this to a visitor the other day, she said her friend had ridden the whole Tour de France route for his holiday and he was 67 with two plastic hips!
Sometimes its discouraging!

I know, gone are the days when I could run all the way up the long steep ridges, now at 62 years I have to chug (Fell running term for, hand on knees, walking as fast as possible) part of the way.
