Dear D.Trotter,
let me be the first to say, and I am sure everyone who reads your posting will agree, it isn't a good idea to walk ANYWHERE without a compass and/or map. You can soon get into difficulty or simply waste a lot of time trying to find your way when a map will put you right straight away. Look on a map as a great reference guide, as well as a lifesaver. It's not like they are heavy - take one, wherever you go, as there is ALWAYS the possibility of making a mistake.

I go with Strider - NO!
We walked it last June, and some of it isn't that clear on the ground, and some waymarking is very sparing, to say the least (esp. the coastal bit).
We took compass & the 2 1:25000 OS Outdoor Leisure maps, which we found invaluable. The strip maps in the guide often don't give you enough of the surrounding area to enable you to work out where you are.
