Got a problem. The CW kicks off in Hemsley and all the guide books tell you what to do when you get to Hemsley, but nothing tells you how to get there.

From the map it looks like getting a train to either York or Thirsk, then a taxi.

The same thing looks like getting from Filey. I can't see any train lines on the map. Is it a taxi from Filey to York?

Transport to and from start/finish lines looks like being expensive.

Any suggestions,please?

Oldun. Forget about HEMSLEY, it doesn't exist. It's HELMSLEY you're after, but that's at the back of beyond. You had best head for Filey which has a railway station on the Hull - Scarborough line with about nine trains each way each weekday. If you walk from Filey to Helmsley and back again then you won't need to bother about taxis ( not that I, who earns a living driving taxis, should be suggesting that ).

Yes, Sammy, that's always my intention. But in case Oldun doesn't want the pleasure of walking it both ways, here's some more information ;
Helmsley is 14 miles from THIRSK station ( about 18 trains each way each weekday, hourly through most of the day, between Manchester Airport and Middlesborough or Newcastle, but none direct for the 211 miles from or to Kings Cross on the East Coast Main Line ) which does not have a taxi rank or cab office but is served by 'SCS' on 01845 524358, 'Dales' on 01845 522745 and 'Prices' on 01845 522709 with a fare of about 22.
Helmsley is also a mile or two further away from MALTON station ( about 15 trains each way each weekday, hourly through most of the day, between Liverpool Lime Street or Manchester Airport / Piccadilly and Scarborough ) whch has a cab office on 01653 696969 and is also served by 'Rydale' on 01653 600026 and '121' on 01653 690121 with a fare of about 24.

Thanks LL. Clearly, getting to Helmsley presents some logistic problems, as my airport is limited to EastMidlands. From there I can get a train, via York, to Malton, from where I can get a taxi. However, travel schedules would make my arrival in Helmsley very late at night.

I am presently reviewing all options.

Oldum, Yes, East Midlands is one of the worst airports for public transport. Long Eaton, at about 8 miles or a 13 taxi fare, is the nearest railway station but you would be better going straight to Derby, 14 miles and a 22 taxi fare away. From Derby there are plenty of Midland Main Line trains to York, but make time to stop off first at the Brunswick and Alexandra pubs just a few minutes walk from Derby station.

It's a pity you are not coming into Durham/Tees valley Airport (formerly known as Teesside Airport),because if the time was right I would have gladly ferried you from there to Helmsley.

Nimrod, Lets hope his plane is diverted from East Midlands to Teesside due to fog, hijacking or some other circumstance.

hI Oldun,
i have a book here by Malcolm Boyes
tittle ''the Cleveland way and the Missing Link'' the missing link is a route on the south of the North York moors, from Scarborough to Helmsley and if you walked the circuit you could start at Scarbborough and finish up back at Scarborough.
you are welcome to borrow the book if you like
regards
ern

Hi Tim. Thanks for the offer. Sending the book to me would cost a bit in postage. If you can give me the ISBN number I will try to get the book here. From the map I have it looks like adding on another 3 days walking (60 klm), but my map shows only a main road.

Nimrod. While writing this I am thinking about this Teeside Airport.................
