I wandered out last weekend to Cray. The White Lion is a very useful alternative to the George for camping at the top of Wharfedale/Langstrothdale. It also has none of the attributes of a cat-litter tray that the garden at the George was famous for!

Landlord at the White Lion is extremely friendly - actually vented a fresh barrel of real ale as Moz and I pitched, so we had a whole 88 pints of virgin beer to try to get through!

He is also improving his camping facilities for this year - at 6:50 he includes full breakfast - fantastic. (or 2:50 w/o).

The George has recently changed hands - so things my change .. who knows, but Cray offers aa alternative route - North Bank of river to direct from pub to Yockenthwaite, without much extra mileage - and is less crowded in the bar!

Just noticed your posting Harry from January regarding camping at Cray (White Lion). As I have also endured a night at the back of the George at 30 degree angle I would be interested in what the Lion has to offer the occasional camper?

Hi,

Just started organising a return excursion, so been in fairly recent contact wih them. They've just put on an extension, so now have a loo and shower available for campers. Tents were pitched in their garden, but the extension building has (temporarily) wrecked the lawn, so it will be in a nearby field, for a while. Evening food is some of the best! - Try the duck breast - they must know the mallard relations of "Jordan" - really huge! Breakfast for campers at (in Jan/Feb.) 4 is pretty fine, too! - And, of course, if there are more than 5 or so, of you, and you let him know you're coming he will (within reason) try to get a beer to suit your taste!

Marvellous!! (I camped there 3 weekends in a row - after posting the last msg!)

H.

Thanks for that H. The George has just lost a camper, Rob.H.
