Having waited too long to book accomodation I find that I have to do a very long day (Hubberholme to Dent village). This seems to about 21 miles according to my research. I'm not used to waking in England so I'm unsure if this is a do-able stage. I'm a weekend walker of average fitness who is used to shorter stages but more mountainous terrain. Anyone done this before who can comment on this ?

Did this a few of years ago, on my very first back-pack trip ... Ouch!

The stage is not too tough but does involve a 1:7 decsent on a road for about 2 miles, which is painful on the feet. I used the "short-cut" via Cam Houses and Cam High Moor, rather than the longer, less steep alternative that continues westward and circles back - can't remember which is the "official" path.

The alternatives for shortening it are to camp behind the bungalaow opposite the Sportsman pub in Cow Gill. Nice pub (also does B&B), limited facilities for campers, but enough (loo + tap).

There is a campsite, at Cow Gill, but we carried on to Dent, the first time I did this option even though it was our intended stop. The Cow Gill site seemed to be run by a set of failed extras from "Deliverance" and the female in our party didn't like the look of the showers that seemed to have conveniently situated knot-holes for the group of leering farm hand we were talking to. Not often I reject a campsite - no matter how primitive (and leaving another 4 miles or so to Dent!).

May be its changed, now, or I just caught it on a bad day?

So .. 3 alternatives
a) A long route, but not too bad!
b) A basic field opposite a good pub.
c) Camping with the locals.

If tried both options a) and b) (and would do b) again!)

Hope that helps, H.

It is do-able but it will make for a long day.In fact I went from Kettlewell to Dent a distance of some 27-28 miles but most of the walk is on easy ground apart from a bit after Cam Houses. If time is short its best to stick to the road for the last few miles as route finding on the field paths can be a bit tricky.Make sure you have enough food with you as there is no where to get supplies between Buckden and Dent apart from Cam Houses and thet might be closed.
