It seems from reading comments on this site that the biggest obstacle to a successful UK walk is blisters/sore feet.
I have walked parts of the Dales Way and intend doing it in full in May. I dont recall the going being too treacherous, would a pair of comfortable sneakers i go running in every day be adequate?

I can't really see any problem.I have walked the Pennine Way in running shoes and apart from wet feet didn't suffer any problems.Fell running shoes tend to be best as they have more grip.At the moment I use Berghaus trail shoes which are slightly heavier than a standard running shoe but offer a bit more cushioning to the feet which is essential when carrying a heavy load.
