Well, not really the *wrong* way, in that any way that gets you to the top is OK... but we lost the path part of the way up and ended up sludging through a seemingly endless bog pitted with holes. Not the most pleasant of trips.

After reaching the summit we headed in the direction of the memorial cross, missing a path back on the way there (no signpost); we ended up carrying on down to Starbotton (?) and walking the mile or so back to Buckden along the road.

We're very new to hillwalking, you see.

(And we could have done with a nice pub in Buckden to unwind afterwards!)

Sounds like you did it right after didnt loose the path,it does actually take you across some very boggy sections, then re-appears again when you get a little nearer to the wall (on your left). Well done for finding Starbotton,though...if you'd gone left at the Fox and Hounds, followed the road for a short way,and then taken a path on the right, down to the river, you would've been on the Dalesway, and could've followed it back to Buckden, instead of the road.
Never mind, its a good excuse to come up and do it again...and im told that theres no such thing as getting lost now...its simply excersising our right to roam!!
