its a shame no a taversty that my passionate love of walking in the mountains and on the moors on a regular basis has led to the breakup from the love of my life (my wife who cant stand being left alone ) and the failure of my marriage.it'll be some time before I can revisit the lakes /snowdonia etc but I can tell you this I'LL BE BACK WITH A VENGENCE.so good by for now see ya all soon

Hi Martyn
I am so sorry of reading about the break up of your marriage, but as a bachelor, alas,I cannot give any contructive thoughts other than I hope and pray that things will work out fine for both of you.

Martyn,
Sir Chris Bonnington once put it something along the lines of :- " Mountaining I suppose is selfish, yes it is selfish, but its love of the mountains and the burning desire to be among them, that makes me the person I am. Without them I would be a lesser person."
My wife no longer comes on walks with me, she used to, but due to health problems and the resulting lack of fitness, the walks became increasingly less enjoyable. She does get frustrated at times when I go off, but knows that I have to do the things that I do. Its all a compromise, and I try to assist her in the things she wants to do, even if it means foregoing something that I would rather do. Its easy to get so enthused with activities like running and walking that it becomes an obsession. Once it becomes an obsession, it then becomes the main focus and parteners feel threatened by it, and start to resent it.
Its then only a matter of time before it comes to a head.
Good luck to you.
Dave.

Surely this is a case of closing the stable door after the horse as bolted.

By the way, that bedroom ceiling of yours needs a coat of paint.

I agree,as well, that it is an uncaring comment.

Its apparent jocularity is but a thin creme brulee crust atop a veritable custard of poison and bitterness.

All the best to you Martyn.....a great deal of peace and serenity is offered by a love of nature.
Keep your boots on.

Hi there everyone,

This is my first time on TWCF. Just wanted to say that Martyn's problem is not a new one. Up here in the Lake District, lonely partners of walkers are referred to as: a Wainwright widow or widower.

I put my family through much worse I admit in that I dragged them up here to live (13 years ago). My husband now travels nearly 80 miles a day to get to work and back and my son's school is 50 miles away! All this so Mother can live amongst the fells!

I am sorry to hear that M's marriage has failed to survive his walking interests. On the bright side: there are many other interests which might have broken a relationship and also made friendship impossible. All the best Martyn (although I don't know you). B

I'm back up to the lakes in dec for a weekend hiking around pillar, high stile, haystacks, kirk fell, gable no worries or guilt feelings about leaving the loved one behind this time .I'll be there to enjoy and find new pastures(and hopefully a girlfriend who likes walking)

hey guys I have found a very delectible lady on a personals site I now frequent (I know its sad ) BUT there is this absolutly fantastic woman on that I've fallen in love with instantly, not only is she super fit but climbs bikes(sorry)swims and does it better than your mr average so I'm holding out for a chance to meet her,for all our woman readers I know its soon after my separation but i'm 50 and I cant afford to hang around + the ex has someone already to keep her warm at night AND I've had to get rid of my 2 year old border terrier (TEARS)because I couldent take her with me to my new digs and the ex 's pad has a no pets policy. aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh roll on december .
anyway lads I'll keep my ear to the ground for sisters and suchlike
regards
a much cheerfuller rockwalker

I once lived in hope, but know I live in sin.

Alas sex as been greatly over rated by the poets, I have never had a lover with thighs like white marble, its the inconvenience of sex they never tell you about.

thank you nimrod.

you're right though norman, there's always something more interesting on the telly. but if you do meet the thighs of white marble, tell her to get her shorts on and walk the coast to coast. it worked for me, thighs of exquisite golden hue. aah, such a waste!!

Debbie what do you think of this poem.

John Betjeman - Myfanwy

Kind o’er the kinderbank leans my Myfanwy,
White o’er the playpen the sheen of her dress,
Fresh from the bathroom and soft in the nursery
Soap scented fingers I long to caress.

Were you a prefect and head of your dormit'ry?
Were you a hockey girl, tennis or gym?
Who was your favourite? Who had a crush on you?
Which were the baths where they taught you to swim?

Smooth down the Avenue glitters the bicycle,
Black-stockinged legs under navy blue serge,
Home and Colonial, Star, International,
Balancing bicycle leant on the verge.

Trace me your wheel-tracks, you fortunate bicycle,
Out of the shopping and into the dark,
Back down the avenue, back to the pottingshed,
Back to the house on the fringe of the park.

Golden the light on the locks of Myfanwy,
Golden the light on the book on her knee,
Finger marked pages of Rackham's Hans Anderson,
Time for the children to come down to tea.

Oh! Fullers angel-cake, Robertson’s marmalade,
Liberty lampshade, come shine on us all,
My! what a spread for the friends of Myfanwy,
Some in the alcove and some in the hall.

Then what sardines in half-lighted passages!
Locking of fingers in long hide-and-seek.
You will protect me, my silken Myfanwy,
Ring leader, tom-boy, and chum to the weak.

Hi Mart,
would be good if we could meet up sometime - I'm not too far from you, maybe we could utilise both cars for an A-B or team up for a circular? Ive been wanting to re-do 'the edges'- Moscar to Robin Hood (15m) for some time...
...you might just be otherwise occupied now though?

rockwalker. Commiserations on the break up of your marriage. I hope you don't mind a personal question during these difficult times, but before getting married did you follow the advice of the great Wainwright himself, namely "To a young man seeking a wife, neatness is the first essential; a trim appearance, a dainty body, a precise outlook. Intelligence is the next virtue to seek, and it is a rare one; it is the compararive deficiency in intellect that makes woman's claim for equality with man pathetic. Next in importance is a sense of humour. But the girl who laughs loudly is to be avoided; look for one who smiles rather than laughs, whose heartiest guffaw is never more than a quiet chuckle" ?
