Dave

Thank you for your kind words. Tom finally succumbed to the cancer in June, his last couple of weeks were spent in Wirral Hospice St. Johns who did a wonderful job and gave us both great support.
I went off in July with a couple of friends and finished Offas Dyke, left it at Hay on Wye a couple of years ago with intention to finish when I lost Tom. Trust me to pick those weeks during the heat wave, it was sooo hard for me - I am a northern flower that wilts in the heat LOL. My mind turned to those maps you sold me and I had promised myself I would do the PW sometime after my 50th birthday (which is on Friday!) soooo - it had to be the next LDP then didn't it?

Hope to see some of you guys out on the trail sometime

Heather

Losing Crowden YHA will be inconvenient for PW-ers, but let's be honest, was it anyone's favourite hostel? I remember agreeing with my walking mate after we had completed the PW that Crowden YHA was perhaps our least favourite overnight stop! There was no self-catering kitchen, and it had all the atmosphere of a local authority outdoor pursuits centre, which is exactly what it will now become, only full-time instead of part-time. And it's miles to a pub, of course!

I stayed at the "old" hostel in 2005 before it moved to the new outdoor pursuits building. Whilst I didn't self-cater I found the hostel quite good although the absence of a local pub was a disappointment. However I guess that we have to blame Tom Stephenson for organising the route through there!

From the Pennine Way Association website

Closure of Crowden Hostel (Except for Large Groups)
Posted on November 11, 2013
It was with both a measure of surprise and disappontment that the members of the Executive of the PWA learnt of the forthcoming closure of the YHA hostel at Crowden in its current form on March 31st 2014.

Indeed it was only when former Secretary Peter Stott tried to reserve a room for a stay next Spring that we , or anyone else as far as we can ascertain, were aware of the situation. Subsequent investigation by both Peter and Chris Sainty revealed from the YHA that a decision and mutual agreement had been reached with Rotherham Council to close the hostel as a functioning youth hostel and all matters relating to the hostel would be handled in future by the owners Rotherham Council. This was confirmed by Mr Colin Gratton-Rayson who is the Outdoor Learning Youth Work Manager for Rotherham Council. Mr Rayson stated that the hostel would be available for bookings by groups. The definition of a group is not at the moment clear but is believed to be not less than ten people per group. Crowden had been operating as what is known as an Enterprise Hostel and the status of these is reviewed on a periodic basis.

To say that this change is a disappointment is an understatement as anyone who has walked over from Edale, even on a good weather day will appreciate, as accommodation hereabouts is very limited. What is of more interest is the covert way the whole process regarding the change has been, with no known news appearing in the press or from the organisations concerned and no information in the outdoor press. This is a major cause of disappointment as there appears to have been no consultation whatsoever.

As it happens Chris Sainty had made a reservation at Crowden some tine ago and he has now received contact from the YHA that his booking has been transferred to the Old House at Glossop. It is obvious that this change will cause difficulties for Pennine Way walkers and it is to be hoped that facilities will become available in the Glossop area as an opportunity exists here for an enterprising organisation.

The situation is to be discussed at the Executive Meeting of the PWA which is being held next Saturday (Nov 16th 2013) at Leeds. The venue is the Friends Meeting House, Woodhouse Lane, Leeds commencing at 1.00 pm and a further report will be made on this website following the meeting.

Just to let you know that I have writen to the YHA asking what consultations did take place and why this is "a positive move for the YHA". I will let you know the response when it is received.

I received a very polite telephone call from the YHA today.

The old hostel was sold and the new one built in conjunction with and "to be owned" by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council. It was agreed at that time that Rotherham Council would have preference to use it as an Outdoor Education Centre with the YHA backfilling any unfilled places. In practice this has meant few places being available except on occasions between the Outdoor courses. Whilst the YHA would consult about changes with organisations where they own the hostel, in this case they didn't so no consultations took place. In answer to a question they didn't consult when they changed to the new hostel as they didn't think that there would be a problem.

Very disappointing for Pennine Way walkers but as they say "we are where we are".

The Old House at Torside (the other side of the reservoir) are now taking bookings for this year so if you need accommodation at Crowden it is worth getting booked up soon or there will be a fair walk to the next B&B.
