Mick set off from St.Bees yesteday Sunday 5th July at 6am. He over-nighted in Kentmere, and now 8.51am Monday is just a few miles off Tebay and the M6. He is going very well up to now and making excellent progress.

Yeah, Les he's going really well, 8.15pm and approaching Keld and halfway! At this rate he could go inside of 4 days, and most of the hard work is done. I think knowing that we will be watching is spurring him on. Come on mick were all behind you.
Dave.

Message from Mick on Spot at Keld 21.22 "All is well". I thought he had stopped for a sleep rather than keep us up-to-date!

Mick is not too far off Reeth at 8.50am Tuesday. I think he is hoping to make Ingleby Cross tonight, then the final push tomorrow. Still going really well, obliviously determined and having the best crossing yet.
Dave.

After a great start it doesn't look good, now on the A1M above Scotch Corner. Hope that you are OK.

Just seen that looks like he is heading for Darlington, the nearest rail station. Hope I am wrong, he does seem to have slowed after Gunerside on reasonably fast ground. If he has had to call it a day, must be something bad, because as you say Harland, he was going at a cracking pace up to then. Let's hope he was making for there for some repair or purchase and will get back on track where he left off.
Dave.

Ankle injury! - very disappointed, but the nature of the terrain made for v hard going in places. The chosen line may well be shorter, with less overall climb but it's bloomin' tough in places! - the high ground was much wetter than expected for July too. Full report to follow...

Just for my interest, LWM, what is your time record, and how many attempts have you made? Just curious...

If I forget to post tracker link - memory like a sieve these days - I'm sure Dave or Les will share from my FB page (which I've also set to 'public' as some sponsors may wish to follow progress.
Ken, my attempts haven't been anything like as successful as Dave's. My best for the Wainwright line still stands at 7days (to St Bees Head) 7.5 into St Bees (2006) - my next attempt failed miserably at Lordstones after just 40m in 2008 I think...to be honest I'm starting to lose track! - 2010 attempt more of less a Wainwright, came unstuck at Grisdale Tarn with badly swollen feet with just 40m to go - 2013 was a sub 5day success to my own line more to the south in places (see 'St Bees or Bust' link) Last year's 1st attempt W-E ended with injured ankle at Richmond.
This yr's attempt is to a similar line to 2013 with last yr's 1st day in reverse (ie. Wrynose and Hardnott Passes and Eskdale)- the idea for the more direct lines - which I think I now prefer to W/Wright's came about in disussion on this forum re. the shortest poss. route with least climb which sounds good until you factor in the stretches of Open Country - both Crookdale and Bretherdale on last yr's attempt were a nightmare! Very tiring and slow going, which put me down on schedule and 9m behind at end of Day2 at Keld.
There always seems to be some kind of daft problem that puts me behind! 2006 - bad weather at E end; 2008 bad planning before start didn't help and 2 nights of poor sleep and very hot day1 and complication with food stop at Lion Inn - by Lordstones it was apparent that it just wasn't coming together at all! - 2010's plans to have a slap up meal in Reeth before a tarp camp at Cringley Bottom didn't materialise due to Reeth being rammed on a Saturday night...
2013 wasn't without it mishaps - resulting in being 7m down on Day1... then leg injury sustained on open moor on Day3 put paid to a sub 4 dayer...
Based on the 2013 attempt, provided I can remain injury free, I should be on for a sub 4 day. Last yr I reccied extensively to 'tune up' my line so we can only see how it pans out this year - the advantage going E-W is that the main climbs (LW Walk, Birkdale/Mallerstang and Ancrow Brow) are more steadily graded this way, though Garburn Pass does come at end of Day3 but it's just a stony plod, (though I'll need to be careful on that steep tussocky descent to Limefitt Park) - Last thing you want I realised after last yr's ankle injury is a steep tussocky climb nr. the end of the day over open moorland...

It looks like Mick started this morning from his camp site rather the Bay, however that could just be that his tracker did not transmit the first at the start, as it can take 10 minutes or more for it to find sufficient satellites.
He is certainly making good and steady progress. He did stop for around 30 minutes at Wheedale Beck, maybe for some adjustments or breakfast. Ive got withdrawal symptoms now!
Dave.

Dave, something has changed on his tracker. He did stay at the Middlewood Farm campsite overnight (or just near it so that he didn't have to pay?). But the earlier spots showed that number 3 was at the campsite i.e. a check when he set up camp - the other 2 were checks at his home. Then the next shown was number 5 (i.e. no number 4) closer to the coast than his campsite at 04.45 before turning back onto the route that he is now on. The current number 1 is shown as 04.55. No doubt you will know what has gone wrong/changed.

It is now back to the original i.e. spot 5 is near to the coast but (for me) spot 4 is missing!

Yes that works. It looks as though he should be at Lovesome Hill about the time he was expecting. If the weather has been as hot as here I hope he had a lot of water with him.

It looks as though he has stopped in the Blue Bell Inn at Ingleby Cross for longer than planned. If he leaves now it will still be a couple of hours before he gets to Lovesome Hill where he was hoping to be at c. 21.30. Alternatively he has stopped for a kip in the cemetery.

Looks like he has stopped about 6.5 mile short of Lovesome Hill. maybe B&B or om the lawn. Not a disaster as such as this was his 4 day schedule, he can still pull it back at this point or settle on a 4.5 dayer. I realised he was slowing as when I did my 4.5 dayer East to West but not as straight as Micks route I arrived at Ingleby Cross from a 4.30am start, at 8pm. U hope he isn't too disappointed with his 1st day.
Dave.

Mick set off again this morning after 5am and looks to be moving well again. His tracker is not updating every 10 minutes at the moment, going over an hour at one point before updating. I think he may struggle to reach Keld today. On a slightly different line I left Ingleby Cross just after 5am and failed to reach Keld by a couple of miles, pitching up at around 10.30pm. It took almost exactly 3 hours from Ingleby Cross for Mick to reach Danby Wiske, the same pace as when I did it. After Keld the comparisons will end as the similarities in route completely change.
Dave.

He should be at Keld in an hour, so he will be back on schedule albeit a few hours late. A real test of endurance beyond my capabilities now or to be truthful ever!

Waem and cloudy here in Lancs Les. He is currently about to start his descent off High Seat Ridge and will be heading for Tommy Road on his way to Tebay and the Lakes. This is much more determined attempt from Mick although some of his previous attempts were affected by atrocious weather.Forecast for up here today is around 27 deg and 32 for tomorrow, not ideal walking temps, lets hope there is a mild breeze too.

Mick is presently approaching the steep drop off into Longsleddale, and around 10 mile or so from Waterhead. He should arrive there between 11pm and Midnight. he's going very well especially considering how warm it has been today, with the hottest day expected tomorrow. Come on Mick last day nearly there!

It must have been a very hard day, so hot. Even in my garden I had to sit down now and again as it was so hot. The last stretch to Waterhead will be very testing as the weather tomorrow looks very hot again with little wind. I hope he makes it to Waterhead tonight although I think it will be after midnight as he must be knackered!

Yeah, it appears that he has called it enough for today and is stopping over in Kentmere. These things are so hard when conditions go against you. It will no doubt now go into the 5th day, but I doubt Mick will be over concerned about that, he will know what he is achieving and what he has experienced in the process, outstanding!

Well done Mick I see that you set off again this morning just after 7 o'clock. I must admit that I thought that the heat and humidity of yesterday may have forced you out with the same but hotter due today.

HJe looks to be rallying today. A later start but going well again, Mick looks like he will get very close today and possibly only a few hours away from St Bees when he stops, or may even press on to finish in the early hours. No stopping him now, superb effort.

With 9 miles to go has he stopped for a rest or overnight at Gosforth or is he to continue into the early hours of tomorrow morning.

Micks gone through Blackbeck, no stopping him now he's going straight through to St. Bees, and will arrive around 1.30am - 2pm ish. I can feel those long long mile after after miles now in the dark. It purely a matter of head down keep going now. For me though it's off to bed, so all I can add is very well done Mick a tremendously spirited, determined achievement.

Well done Mick, looks as though you got there just after 2.30 this morning having started at 07.00 yesterday - don't know how you can do it. Does that make it a 3 day crossing as it is less than 4 days?

We count the days, hours and minutes. This crossing on half the same line as Micks last success, but is around 17 hours faster!

Back home resting up from an ordeal I have no desire to repeat! Feet not too bad - forefoot blisters, but intact - not too much swelling either. I still believe a good fit walker could get to Lovesome Hill on day 1... a very wet June has left the LWW far squishier than expected and nr Cockheads I went right in up to mi cream crackers! I took some getting out as my right leg cramped badly as well... a windy day didn't help either as on the narrow rutted tracks the wind was sufficient to put me off balance losing good footings at times and I failed to get a good rythm going. And then losing my water twice didn't help... but more on that later...

Hi Mick, the tracker obviously doesn't tell it how it is. It looked to me that you moving well over that section with tracker spacing quite even so I assumed ground conditions were good. I know that feeling of 'Never Again' however the number of tomes Ive said, only within a short space of time started to think how I could have done things better, then..............., you know the rest.
Rest well and I look forward to your full report.
Dave.

Traditional slipway start Dave - message 4 is hidden behind 3 at 4:00am and is exactly from the pitch site in the far corner of the field - dropped tent of in a secure location for collection by local animal rescue* - then hot footed it down FP by Marner Beck which has tree cover blocking next signal probably - stopwatch at start shows 04:32:53 - supposed to be 4:20 but I'd forgotten how long it takes to strike a tent and pack it up! Next signal is just before going under trees at Farsyde Hse after turning off Cleveland Way turning inland.

*for E to W 'ers buying a cheap tent and staying at Middlewood Fm. site (8 pitch fee) may be an option to consider. I arranged with the local animal rescue to collect it later that morning, along with a few other bits, to aid their car boot fundraising. Middlewood proprietors were very helpful and there is a lot of support for RAW Animal Rescue in the area.
Booking a bed for 1 person for 1 night not easy - they really want families and couples for their luxury ensuites and some want minimum term and reluctant to tie up a bed when it could be more profitably let otherwise. Fair play to them of course.

Did you ever manage to set up SPOT Adventures Dave..? Trying to set it up so waypoints are saved. The mobile app seems to save the messages indefinitely, but I thought I'd give the adventure set up a go... last year I left it more than a week and it was all gone... but earlier this year, idly checking the mobile app, I was pleasantly surprised to see it all still there.

No Mick I never set that up, in fact I didn't renew my SPOT subscription this year as I was considering the Delorme unit. However I thought that the SOS function was active as part of the original purchase, but apparently not, you have to have the basic subscription, so I may now renew.

Yes it's expensive for just a few days a year - must admit I only got the Spot as you'd used it to good effect (and that leg injury in 2013...)

Not worked that out yet Mike... but I used 2 pace indicators:
1) wearing a heart rate monitor and trying to keep to 120bpm avg.(ie. a good steady low rate - lower the better for long days)
2) using the down timer facility on stopwatch (set to 20mins) Very useful but this technique relies on knowing where the 'milemarks' are. I use features in my written instructions to give me a reasonably accurate idea. (ie. 150m past gate. When timer beeps I then have a rough idea whether I'm up or down on that mile)
based roughly on 16hr days with approx 2hrs of food/footstops

Well done Mick. Outstanding.

I often read journals of the long distance walkers in the US.

It takes a few weeks before some of them can 'ramp up' there daily mileage to over 25 - 30 miles a day or more. One guy regularly makes 40!

Incredibly, you seemed to have exceeded this from the starting gate.

Very impressed.

Mike

Cheers Mike - that Lovesome Hill is proving elusive though...

I'd love to see someone else have a go at this same line.

The North York Moors took more out of me than last time and I had no wayfinding issues so what do you do - to get that last 7m to the Northallerton road..?
Playing catch up next day wasn't part of the plan either, but I was well chuffed to get to Keld for 10pm.
How I got it so badly wrong next morning, I think was more down to too much confidence as I'd covered that ground a few times now and there is a good dry route, but I just missed it in the mist (maybe a GPS unit would help..?) and ended up in bogs - whether this was down to the wet June, who knows - can't have helped, but it took hours just to get a few miles... thus ruining my chances of getting to the YHA at Waterhead. The SPOT markers show my position too far to the north - I did try and correct but too little too late. My other error was in not turning S on the hill bagger's track to come out near the obvious feature as shown on OS as a double dashed line and clealy shown on Google. Its' big big mistake to think you've got all day as well...

Full respect to Dave for his 3 days 15 hrs - a longer route and with a tent!

Finally got the report online...

2016 coast to coast attempt

I found it tough this year though - ha ha, I seriously expected to get the last train out of St Bees - hence it was still an 'attempt' and only just under 4 days with just 2 hours to spare...
I still think a good fit walker could make it to Lovesome Hill on Day 1 though... which means I'm coming round to thinking of giving it another go, but don't tell the missus...

I did have a go at setting up a 'SPOT Adventure' this year... clearly don't know what the f*** I'm doing lol, but the 'check in' messages are shown (start/end of day) and the tracker has plotted a reasonably accurate route here
