Cicerone have just published a new guide from Maryport to Bowness on Solway to Wallsend and then onwards to South Shields. Their comments are as follows; even if you don't do the extra bit a West to East guide will be helpful to those walking in that direction.

"The first flaw I wished to rectify was that most, if not all, published descriptions fell into the trap of describing the frontier westbound, from Wallsend. True the original Wall was constructed from the Tyne so the earliest romantic travellers were influenced by the order of the numbers attributed to the milecastles and turrets at the birth of frontier studies. But walking tour companies quickly learned that the best way to take their clients on the new National Trail was eastbound!

The prevailing weather, wind and rain, comes from behind and the sun, rather than beaming in your face, rises over your shoulder to illuminate the landscape before you: it is no surprise that the majority of classic views of Hadrianís Wall are eastward perspectives.

Secondly, I wanted to look beyond the tight definition of the mural line, and if practical, open up a bigger vision of the frontier for walkers. Stretching east to the Roman North Sea port of Arbeia (South Shields) on Hadrianís Cycleway and west to explore what Iíve called Hadrianís Coast. So with Maryport, beautifully served by public transport (buses and trains) and boasting an important Roman fort and museum I had a ready-made new western seaboard start point. From the railway station through the town to the harbour and so up the hill to the Senhouse Museum and the extensive banks of Aluana Roman fort, itís a great start to the magnificent frontier adventure Ė an adventure that in its fullest expression ventures 134 miles, all the way to South Shields."

Hi Harland, do you have a link..?
That quote sounds a bit confusing to me...
Is it this one?

Not sure why it didn't come out as a direct link so you will need to copy and paste it.

Harland, what are you like..?
Linking to external sources could do with a thread of it's own - it's easy to get wrong and confusing to put right!

The route sounds interesting - would make a great C2C round trip heading up from St Bees, though I would imagine pretty desolate going from Silloth up to Bowness..? Brr... looking at those marshes on the map sends shivers...

This would be the link:
http://www.cicerone-extra.com/article/in...il#.VeQvQZerG2n

In experimenting with the 'insert link' facility, the only way I could duplicate your earlier post was by adding it directly as text thus:

http://www.cicerone-extra.com/article/index.cfm?articleid=255&title=Hadrian%E2%80%99s-Coast-%E2%80%93-Beyond-the-National-Trail#.VeQ0XZerG2n

Did you use the link facility? This is the 2nd box on the tool bar - a blue/green world with a few chain links below - shown here

Clicking this facility introduces two pop-up boxes - the first for the link address has http:// ready for if your address only begins with 'www' thus:

www.cicerone-extra.com/article/index.cfm...il#.VeQvQZerG2n

The 2nd pop-up box lets you add a title to your link. eg: 'here' (as here) , or say, 'link to latest guide book' (as link to latest guide book) or the full link address if you type your link address a second time (as http://www.cicerone-extra.com/article/in...il#.VeQ0XZerG2n)

hope this is helpful,
regards
mick

I didn't know that there was a formal facility to add a link to a web page - just hope that I remember how next time!

Having walked the Pembrokeshire Coast Path earlier in the year I wasn't sure whether to do another one. However I am starting to get itchy feet (not athletes foot!) but I can't find one that I haven't done before that I really want to do. I normally like something about 200 miles, if I could spare the time again (shorthand for getting time off from she who must be obeyed) I wouldn't mind doing the South West Coast Path again. The alternative is to fill in the bits between the walks I have done (SWCP, OD, PW, WHW & GGW) so that I will have walked Land's End to John O'Groats.

Surely she'll be glad to get you out from under her feet..?

Could you not do a shorter one, say SDW for 'thinking space'?
Though HW would fit your CV nicely...

The time I walked the South West Coast Path it cost me a fortune. Her sister came to stay and they went out shopping every day and then she went off with her friends to Rome as I was away so long!

Harland,
Another way to post a link is to, as normal copy it into your post, then run the cursor along it to highlight it, then post.
Dave.

Just tried that Dave - nice one. Just have to make sure you highlight all the relevant bits, so may be better to paste away from other text?
Yep, still learning like you Harland... thing is I'll have forgotten by tomorrow...
