On my toings and froings on the Coast to Coast over the years I've had a nagging feeling that a bike would be good in places (this has always been the case where cyclists go flying past esp. on the Blowarth/Blakey trackbed section. Coming out of Danby Wiske one yr a guy actually slowed down and shouted: 'You want to get yourself a bike mate!' before pedalling away at speed...
So, that's just what I plan to do - get myself a bike... But it's got to be one I can carry - ie. a folding model.
Here's the gist
A Brompton is not a best choice though due to 16" wheels - 20" being better as much of the route would be over rough ground.
Plan is to carry the bike over the hills where riding is impractical, keeping to a similar line as my previous later attempts, though maybe avoiding the LWW...
Problem is, I'm now used to only packing 12lbs max... adding wheels is going to take me to around 32lbs and cost a fair bit, but it'll be a great adventure and a bit different.

Well, I managed to get the weight of the bike down by 2 lbs last year, and made attachm, ent to the frame more secure, but missed my last opportunity in October to give this a go, as I decided I needed to make a cover for transportation as I read somewhere you may be refused on buses and trains without a cover/bag for a folding bike. I bought one from Sports Direct (at sale price) but it's too small (just!) and needs some darts sewing in... coundn't get the sewing machine working, bought another one but then got sidetracked...
So back on it, been on my fitness programme since January, but as I'm only working part-time these days I'm feeling idle to say the least... but if I can my act together I'll update with any progress

Finally got the bike weight under 20lbs (now on 3rd folding bike...)- giving this a shot next week - be setting off week Thursday morning. Had intended to overnight at Tarn Flatt camping barn, but apparantly it closed 2 yrs ago... shame as I always fancied staying there...

Thanks Harland, not taken the mudguards off yet... is it set to continue? ...or is it to become the wettest July 'since records began' from the middle of next week?
Here's hoping the bike doesn't fall to bits!

Met Office website for Keld:-
UK Outlook for Monday 16 Jul 2018 to Wednesday 25 Jul 2018:

Monday should start dry with sunny spells in southeastern and central areas, but warm temperatures here may spark off a few thundery showers. It will be cooler in the northwest, with some rain or showers, which may extend southeastwards to many parts into Tuesday. Brighter conditions will follow with a few showers in the west and northwest. From Wednesday onwards, it's looking generally more changeable than recently, with all parts seeing some spells of sunshine, but also rain or showers at times. More organised bands of rain may arrive from the west at times, but probably fragmenting as they spread southeastwards. Still some fine weather with sunny spells, especially in the southeast. Temperatures nearer average in the north, but still very warm in the south and east.

I knew it... typical! - looks like I'll be getting wet then and with no spare dry clothes... might need to get a bar bag as I'm struggling for pack space as it is. Lightning not good on tops carring an aluminium bike either...
Thanks for that though... to honest I didn't dare look at the forecast grin

If anyone's interested, or just Harland, I'll be using a phone tracker app. this time - as a test here's yesterday's effort:
FollowMee link for Sun 15/7
...the balloon icons clearly closer together on the walked section after crossing the A57. I reckon it takes around 3-5mins to fold and stash the bike ready for carrying. Tell you what, I felt like a complete idiot carrying a bike, even if only to an audience of frisky bullocks!
Planned carrys:
Day1
Wasdale Head to Sty Head (though 'tis bridle so push may be possible...)
Route past Angle tarn and Rossett Gill descent (again bridle)
Day2
Skelgyll woods (FP)
Grayrigg Fell, after repeater station (though should be nice and dry at present up there)
The dreaded open country section over Mallerstang Edge and between Lodge Hags (as far as the road though may opt to push on the downhill shooter's track - def. no riding on OC!)
Maiden Castle planned visit, between rd and bridle over moor to Grinton Lodge
Day2
Final carry will be up on FP through Arncliffe wood to meet the bridle on Scarth Moor.
I did plan a further carry across the moor to the shooter's hut above Glaidale, but decided to stick with Wainwright and take the rigg route as I could well be knackered by then...

A max of around 10m in all should do it I reckon to keep reasonably close to my more southerly line.

Good luck, trust that all goes well.

Disappointing that I presume that no new members are allowed now because of trolls, or whatever the word is. A pity as I am sure that many people (potential Sherpa customers) that are contemplating these walks would benefit from other walkers that had completed them. I know that before my first long distance walk I found the website very helpful and informative.

oops, that 2nd Day 2 should of course read Day3...

Thanks Harland... it's a complete unknown, but as Dave once said - 'If you knew you could do it, it wouldn't be a challenge'...

Yes, agreed. Surprising that this site still gets the amount of visitors it does though. I find myself, thinking, and saying even: 'Back in the day when the internet was good.' - even postulating saying in the not too distant future: 'Do you remember the internet? - what was all that about?' Already Google Earth 'aint wot it used to be' with scrubbed out signage and it's now all very pixalated zoomed right in, and what happened to the 'fly through' plug in? Advertising pop-ups are now rife and killing t'internet... but apparently it all costs big money and Sherpa are moving with the times at least with their Facebook page which is surely less expensive to moderate... credit to them for keeping this forum on and hopefully the combined wisdom (or lack of it) will still inspire others to 'give it a go' and sensibly use their carriage facilities smile

All packed up and ready for the off! Thursday morning planned start.
Hope this link works...

http://www.followmee.com/mapx.aspx?token=343320d9-77ee-4e1b-a31e-c7bbbc697e69

(When out of signal I think device stores data and transmits when a signal is next available, so could be patchy in Lakes and Dales)

Good luck Mick, it will certainly be a learning experience. Re the route from Sty Head to Sprinkling Tarn, that will almost all be a carry too, until you reach the better path leading past EsK Hause. I will be tracking you with interest.
I have been itching to do something too but have quite a problem with my neck muscles at present. It has cost me several lost jobs already, one week in, and no improvement as yet. Similar I guess to whiplash, very stiff on one side, muscles in deep spasm.
Anyway all the best, hope the weather is with you too.

I can't get that link to work, it's just showing the map with a balloon at near Wasdale Head, not the usual SPOT tracking balloons.

It looks as though he spent the night at YHA Grinton Lodge, that will mean that he is on schedule to finish today.

It is gone 09.00 and he is still there, slacking or just confident?

He has stopped at The Lion Inn for refreshment, not far to go although he has got that steep road beside "Fat Betty" to cycle up or more likely walk!

Ha ha, well yeah, that was a bit different! Great fun at times but hard work in places coaxing Max (the bike) up some of the hills... Apologies for the tracker - sounds like it was indeed patchy. I paid for 14 days history which is under a a tenner. But I think it sounds like the link only showed real time postions and not the stored ones. My map shows all the balloons like SPOT, but sounds like you couldn't see them... I suppose you get what you pay for. Interestingly, after I'd cancelled my SPOT sub, I learned that you can now subscribe for less that the full 12 months that was the previous minimum term. SPOT store your card details and take it out automatically - it went up quite a bit after Brexit as payment is in Euros, so it came as a bit of shock when they took it out last year!
The rear wheel turned out to be a bit 'technical' which made spoke replacement tricky, but more on that later...

Well done, a pity about the tracker as it would have helped to look back and see which way you had gone after being away from the computer for a few hours. However I did like the speed showing as I could then see whether you were walking or cycling. The balloon going down the hill at RHB showed, from memory, 6 mph so I knew that you were going down and not cycling back up!

Ha ha indeed yes - most of the climbs show up as 0mph lol. I heard the third spoke go on the bend flying down the hill into Fylingdales and had to pull over as I didn't want to risk further damage. I'll see if I can't work out how to share the whole route transmissions... I don't really understand what they mean by 'static' and 'dynamic' in the sense of sharing route info. I've emailed them for advice and will report back.

Ok, the problem with the tracker seems to me selecting 'Dynamic' rather than 'Static' when generating a shared link. So this link should show the whole route:

http://www.followmee.com/mapx.aspx?file=l/lightweightmick/C3FC.kml

cheers - hope it works!

What were you doing in Ambleside? Visiting every food establishment or had you been to the pub and were meandering your way back to the hostel?

Never left after arriving Harland... did go looking for the bike shed mind (6:50:37pm) ... and had a walk along 'the front' next morning to take a few pics of the pier (as far as 8:11:41am). Didn't sleep too well there as it was very hot and the window would only open about 8" so a fan was running all night and the guy in the next bunk had his light on all night... hence the morning walk before breakfast! The app can be set to high accuracy but I thought it might use more power..? (not sure whether times are GMT or BST btw - seem to recall getting off for around ten past 8)
