I am interested in doing the Lyke Wake - either end of July or early August - but not on my own. Anybody else in the same situation and fancy doing it then?

Hi Sharon
I am also going to do the walk on the Sat after the longest day together with a few friends and we are all on the mature side.
We do a 10/14 mile walk most Saturdays with extra training mid week, do any of the more experienced Lyke walkers think this is sufficient for the 40 miles? We are aiming to do 20 miles about 2 weeks before the event. Like you Sharon, I am following all the advice given.

Also do you think that a GPS is a vital piece of equipment for the walk? One of our members cannot navigate unless there is a concrete works in the vicinity and as none of us have used a GPS yet it might be more of a hindrance than a help.

People were doing the LWW and all sorts of other paths and trails before GPS was around, so realistically, its not an essential item to have. A map and a compass and the ability to use them are however!

Having said that, a GPS can be useful, if for nothing else than to tell you exactly where you are, so you can then switch to map and compass. Even an inexperienced GPS user should be able to get the current position from the device. But practice is the only way to be sure.

Treat it like a pair of boots - you wouldn't consider doing the LWW in a brand new pair of boots without having walked them in first would you?

My GPS walked flawlessly all the way across the C2C recently and I never had to resort to the compass stuffed in the bottom of my pack. But then a compass will never run out of juice.

Sorry for the quiet - been gadding about a lot lately.

Thanks for all the advice ... unfortunately, it's off. I walked a trial 26 miles a few weeks ago (undulating ground, nothing too serious) in about 8 hours - my feet were shot to pieces and I was physically shattered (hips very painful in particular - don't know why). My mate and I decided not to pursue the LWW at this point - seems silly to start out on something you know you won't achieve. We are very disappointed but are consoling ourselves with a girlie weekend doing more leisurely walking in the Peak District (and lots of Bakewell Pudding!) instead.

Trekker - hope you still do it. Let us know how you get on.

Hi Sharon
So sorry you can't do the LWW this year, but you are doing the right thing by abandoning it this year. Are you aiming for next year?

Hi Sharon

Sorry to hear you are not doing the walk as I was wondering if we would bump into you. Our walk is going ahead the weekend but we will have plenty of support if we cant make it.

Have a lot of charity money riding on this so have to give it our best shot.

Let you know how it went.

Regards

Hi Sharon

Well we did it. It was hard but we had a great sense of achievement. We set out at 9 pm on the Fri and finished at 2 pm on the Sat. I did not have one blister but the men in our party had plenty.
After a good shower and bed at 8.30 on the Sat nightwe had no stiffness the following day so we must have got the training right.
Out support people were marvelous, tea at every stop and bacon sandwiches at 5 am, great.
I think if you have good walking boots that is the key to the walk. The better the boots the more protection for your feet.
Will keep an eye on the site so hope to see your name again.

All the best

Apologies for reviving an old post - but it's a good one.

Sharon - bad luck last year. Are you planning an attempt this year?

We (the respectthestupidity.com boys) plan to run the Lyke Wake walk in July this year, hoping to do it in 9 - 10 hours or so (early start and we want to be at Raven Hall in time for dinner!). Does this seem feasible to any of you Dirgers out there? We have the same fantastic support crew that assisted us with our seven day running of the coast-to-coast last year.

Anyone know how training might need to differ between seven consecutive fell 'marathons' that was the C2C and a one day 'hit' of 40 miles. Surely Tonyk and LWM will have helpful thoughts on this one (amongs others).

Thanks,

Matt

Forgot to say, as with Sharon, this is planned as a 40 mile run for my 40th.
