Anyone know how training might need to differ between seven consecutive fell 'marathons' that was the C2C and a one day 'hit' of 40 miles. Surely Tonyk and LWM will have helpful thoughts on this one (amongs others)

Hi Matto,

I have found a 10k training schedule to be the best way of preparing for this type of event.Really long runs aren't necessary unless you lack confidence and need a psychological boost. If you already have a good fitness base then three months of hard training will knock you into shape. With these kind of distances I have tended to taper early to make sure the body is fully recovered from the training.

Thanks for that Tonyk. Everything you've said so far has been spot on.
Being more than happy with 10k's we need not worry too much about the physical training then. My running buddy is gradually slipping into 'bonkers' fitness. As a 2:50 marathoner he's got an automatic entry to London, and he says if he runs under 2:45 there he gets an automatic entry into elite class in New York.
I, being 10 years older and slower, have to settle for trotting in twenty minutes behind.

I guess we'd better sharpen up on our navigation though. The C2C was easy but the conditions were perfect. Up on the moors in the middle of a bog with a sea fret down would be a different kettle of fish.

Thanks again,

Matto

This website might interest you,Matto.Sharon Gayter won the Lyke Wake race in 6hrs 51 min and also broke the LEJOG record last year. Her 10k and marathon times are nothing special, but it seems she improve as the distance increases. It shows you don't have to be a fast runner to succeed at ultra distance.

Hi Matto - good to see you're up to old tricks!
I don't think fitness will be a problem for you, but consider getting a few more hills into your legs. Only a personal opinion but I think it will help a lot to get some good LSD of 30m+ - the hillier the better. Divorce yourself from the mentality of the marathon - finish strong with joy in your heart - cheers m8, good stuff!

Thanks guys.

Interesting link Tonyk, thanks. We were going to enter the race this year but the particular weekend wasn't convenient for us. Maybe next year after we've reccied it this July.

Thanks LWM. Good advice. We shall do as we did in the C2C. Forget about the distance, start slow and be prepared to slow down, finishing with a smile, a limp and a belly full of jelly sweets.

We were hoping for another bigger project this year, more akin to last years seven day C2C, but family / illness pressures have put paid to that (for now). We are still looking for ideas for future stupidity.

Cheers.

I completed LLW in 1970 when a mere lad of 17 and, very briefly, a member of the armed forces. From what I remember we were split up into teams of four, and because I was the eldest I was put in charge of our little group (the wonders of military thinking). We set off at noon on the Saturday and walked, in glorious sunshine until about 7ish (I think) at which point we set up camp, and availed ourselves of the gastronomic delights of the compo rations supplied (I salivate at the thought) We started off next morning at about 7am, and continued in increasingly murkier conditions until the skirl of the pipes (sounds painful) led us to our check in point at noon (who needs GPS?) After savouring the heady delights of success, we were driven back to base, I seized up totally on the bus and took about 3 hours to climb up four flights of stairs, to my room. Aah memories
For some strange reason I have always wanted to repeat the experience. Maybe one day.

Ayup Nimrod

I don't think he's a relative. If he is he must be the only one in the family with any brains
