I am planning to do the Haute Route de Pyrennes in 2007 and am trying to get a grip on the difficulty level of the 4 or 5 days graded a E (Exceptional) in the Cicerone Guide. I am quite comfortable with the days graded 1 to 3.
I have not used crampons or an ice axe before but have little problem with the usual snow drifts found in the Alps etc. so my question is about the level of technical ability and equipment needed to tackle these stages. Is the the difficulty level based on time of year? ie. It becomes easier as you move from June to September.
In late summer - assuming a good summer - are crampons and ice axe needed or could one get away with instep crampons and walking poles.
All comments appreciated.
