It's soon becoming "walking season" again. (Yes, I know ... one can walk at any time of the year ... but isn't the Spring a lovely time to walk??)

So, as it were, the HikeMania family are planning our Hadrian's Wall walk for May 2007. We've diligently perused articles by footsore, Thebod and others. We've decided to walk West to East, starting sometime in mid-May. Nightstops will likely be in
  • Carlisle (staying with friends)
  • Walton (Centurion?)
  • Gilsland or Greenhead (??)
  • Steel Rigg/Vindolanda area (Twice Brewed or Vallum Lodge ??)
  • Wall (Hadrian Hotel, or the Crown Inn in Humsaugh ??)
  • East Wall Houses (Robin Hood's Pub)

That's all, because we will then stay with relatives near Newcastle. (We'll take the bus or Metro from/to our ending/starting points, for the last day or two.)

So, is anyone else planning to walk the Hadrian's Wall Path in May? Does anyone have any suggestions for improvement, or words of wisdom, regarding our planned itinerary?

Hi HikeMania, Here indoors and myself will be walking Hadrians Wall starting off in Newcastle on 28 May and finishing in Bowness on 3 June. Our itinery is as follows:
Hadrians Lodge Hotel (Newcastle), Heddon Lodge (Heddon-on-the-Wall), Hadrians Hotel (Wall), Saughy Rigg Farm (Twice Brewed), Centurion Inn (Walton), Courtfield Guest House (Carlisle) and The Old Rectory (Bowness).
We might pass you on the way. As we are comming from Germany, we will be arriving on the Ferry in Newcastle. On completing the path, we will be spending two nights in Seahouses to see the Puffins of Farne Islands.

Hi Robin --
Our travel dates are now sorted, and it appears that we will likely be finishing the walk in Newcastle on the day you arrive.
Perhaps we should pop in to the Hadrian's Lodge for a pint on the 28th? Always nice to meet fellow walkers.

I'm setting off west to east on Monday as part of a longer walk for charity:
www.blencathra.org.uk/cfwalk

Expect to get to Banks on Day 1 and Chollerford on Day 2. I was up on HW on Monday and Wednesday and very comfortably covered the stretch from Carlisle to the Brunton crossroads east of Chollerford.

Of course, it helped that conditions were perfect. Hope it is as good for the next fortnight!

That bar can't really call it a pub) is definitely a good start of the walk.

Some other not to be missed pubs along the walk:

Keelman's Inn (Jug of Beer)
Robin Hood Inn
Crown Inn
Twice Brewed
Centurion Inn Garden
Greenhead hotel
Kings Arms

Thanks Onslow -- some of those places you've mentioned are already in our plans, so we'll try to include the others as well!

And Robin -- we'll see you Monday the 28th, in the bar of the Hadrian's Lodge Hotel. If you have a specific timeframe you'd like us to plan for, please let us know. I'm sure we'll arrive by late afternoon (or early evening at the very latest).
