There have also been very high speed warm winds and freezing cold winds. At the moment, on the walk to day, we had ankle deep mud, calf height snow, black ice, and a wind so cold I had to wear a ski mask. Also today we had bright blue sky followed by heavy, low, can't see you hand, clouds and now torrential rain. I feel as if I am back in an English summer.

I think the UK is getting "Credit Crunch" snow. You will be able to go skiing from your front doors. No need to spend money going abroad on holiday !!!

Yes, you get your fair share of weather in Switzerland.

Finally got back online.....thanks for the advice we have decided to get a GPS but not sure which one to get. Concentrating on the map & compass reading, getting there slowly but its all coming together.

Been offline for some time....thanks to all for the replies / advice.

The the dates are set and the route planned, arrive St Bees 16th Sept, start the walk on 17th, hope to arrive Robin Hoods Bay 28th. The route may be a bit obvious to seasoned c2c walkers but as this is our first we have decided to stick to a well trodden route (no pun intended)

17th St Bees to Ennerdale
18th Ennerdale Bridge to Rosthwaite
19th Rosthwaite to Patterdale
20th Patterdale to Shap
21st Shap to Kirkby Stephen
22nd Kirkby Stephen to Keld
23rd Keld to Reeth
24th Reeth to Richmond
25th Richmond to Ingleby Cross
26th Ingleby Cross to Clay bank Top
27th Clay bank Top to Glaisdale/Grosmont
28th Glaisdale/Grosmont to Robin Hoods Bay

We have decided to camp at most places, a couple of youth hostels when and where we can, with a couple of B&B's at the back end of the route.

The training has started, did a 21 mile walk last week (in 8.5 hours, no stops). In the Lincolnshire Wolds, so not to many big hills. Fast pace, aching legs, sore feet but we now know what our fitness levels are at :-(

Is there anyone else on the forum planning to be on the route during those dates?

I know that you may already be doing it but when you go out training make sure that you carry your rucksack with about the same amount of weight that you will be carrying - vegetables and a few cans (not for drinking!) help.

Having weighed what you will be taking and then carried it for a few training walks will then make sure that you chuck out the stuff that "may come in useful"! I am told that having packed what you think you will need then chuck half of it out! Even get down to reducing weight of the very light things e.g. either take one of those very small free toothpastes (my dentist gave me some for free) or make sure that you save one that is nearly finished. Some individuals on here would probably recommend that you had your teeth taken out so that you didn’t carry toothbrush/paste and your head would be lighter! The free small toothbrushes that you get on some aeroplane flights are also good. I know that the weight difference isn't that much but it does all add up.

Couldn't agree more about leaving light weight things. I wouldn't take compass, GPS gadget or mobile phone but keep my teeth and toothpaste as luxuries.

Stops are best avoided as they tend to break your pace, although I do make exceptions for public houses.

I agree with Mr Lizard. Walking is a rhythm for me - once I find the rhythm, I don't want to stop. I tend to have a break after about 8 miles or so - but then I don't tend to do 21 miles very often.

Been doing the training walks with about 10kg in the back pack, we will be using the Sherpa Van service but I will still have a bit of weight to carry due to a Canon 20d camera, 2 Lenses and a tripod.....plus food and drink and other essentials.
