I loved all of it as well despite the weather. The highlight of it all, so I am told is the Cheviot's, I will have to take their word for it, because all I saw of the 28 miles was, no more than a few metres in front most of the time as I battled the driving rain and headwind. When I did manage to raise my head I actually see as far as 50 metres all round, so I havent got a clue what they look like. Hopefully next time tackling them first on a North to South route, I will be able to enjoy them more.
Dave.

Everyone talks about the amazing High Cup Nick. When I walked PW alone in September 1999 I was in pea soup mist at that point. I remember walking by compass bearing literally inching forward, sensing that ahead of me was a big drop! I never saw anything, but sensed a great void out in front of me. I just found the path at the edge and walked down out of the mist missing one of the wonders of the PW.
Maybe I have to revisit High Cup Nick on a clear day? But it is a long way from Australia!

Hi Barney, shame about High Cup...I assume you have seen photos of it.

When we did the PW we met a couple at High Cup who were making their 4th visit in an attempt to see it in its glory. Rewarded in the end!

Great views west across Kinder Reservoir, Derbyshire, Manchester and Lancashire in the first days. Scary views of moors on fire approaching Lothersdale. No views at all on Fountains Fell, Pen-y-ghent, Dodd Fell, Great Shunner Fell or Cross Fell.

Fantastic view across Sleightholme Moor. Awesome walking from Langdon Beck to Cauldron Snout and up to High Cup Nick. Yes, we got the view from the lip of HCN - stunning.

Great views along Hadrian's Wall and into the forest.

Stunning views for the first day on The Cheviots (overnighted at Uswayford). No views and heavy rain on the second day (changed clothes at 2nd hut!).

Until we got to the summit of The Schil. There the weather lifted, and we had stunning views into Scotland for the rest of the walk down into KY.

I want to do it again. "Once In A Lifetime"???

When I first walked the bit from Standedge to the Stoodley Poker, it was in dense mist and I couldn't see diddley squat (the first time I saw the Poker was from about 20 yards away). But it was really atmospheric - especially crossing the M62 and then going up to Blackstone Edge. It really felt like I was in the middle of nowhere. When I subsequently walked it in good weather, I was a little dissappointed that there was industrial civilisation all around.

Thank you all for your replies as all info is appreciated by both Ian and I.
Has anybody done the walk during June and what were the conditions then? Another stupid question perhaps?
Also we walk all over Southern Spain. We climbing up to 1000 metres over rocks in river beds etc as people will know who have walked in the area. What training would anybody suggest for our 15 day PW walk?
At present we walk 10 miles mid week plus our usual Sunday bash of up to 18 - 20 km combined with a weekly gym session or two on cross trainer. At present we are on random programme No 14 for one hour at 60rpm with 3.75 kilo back pack. We are both over 60, quite fit for age and enjoy a drink or two.
Any good pubs on route?
Take care and many thanks.
Bill.

Hi Bill,
re conditons in June,
a lot of bogs in 1974 , but i expect it has been improved with a lot of paving stones since then
weather varying from very hot and sunny to rain mist and frost on a night, think that is it in nutshell,
as for fitness , you sound as though that won't be a problem
all the best for your walk

Morning Bill, or is Bet,
have a look and see if you can get any ankle gaiters
they stop grit and small stones getting in boots.
