OK, just booked our flights. Arriving in London on 1/9/09 and departing 13/9/09. Ordered the Anthony Burton guidebook. Now all we have to do is decide which B&Bs to stay at and decide how many days to walk. Looking at about 7 days walking East to West:

1. Wallsend (start)
2. Heddon on the Wall or Wylam
3. Causey Hill
4. Housesteads or Once Brewed
5. Gilsland
6. Walton
7. Carlisle
8. Bowness on Solway

Having done the C2C, Cotswolds Way, and Dingle Way with full kits, we are going to wimp out this time and use Sherpavan baggage service and one of us will wear a lumbar pack for daily essentials.

We'll post out exact itinerary when it's done.

Landryrk, good luck, it's a lovely walk, much easier than the c2c. I haven't done the others so cannot comment.

If you have the weather as fine as we did (all bar one day), you will have a wonderful time. The hospitality was just great, and the food very good. As for the history and places to visit along the route you will be spoilt for choice.

Looking forward to hearing about it when you have done it.
Regards,
HB

OK, our accommodations have been booked for the walk in September. Watch out for two Texans on the march.

01/09 Wallsend: Hadrian's Lodge Hotel
02/09 Heddon-on-the-Wall: Houghton North Farm B&B (eat at The Swan Inn or The Three Tuns?)
03/09 Chollerford: The Crown Inn (in Humshaugh)
04/09 Windshields Crag: Saughy Rigg Farm B&B
05/09 Gilsland: Bush Nook B&B (Eat at B&B or walk back to Samson's Inn in Gilsland?)
06/09 Walton: The Centurion Inn
07/09 Carlisle: The Angus Hotel
08/09 Bowness on Solway: Maia Lodge (has a hot tub!)

After departing Bowness on Solway, we plan to bus/train our way to Huddersfield and then bus to Holmfirth for two days so we can see the filming locals for Last Of The Summer Wine. Then it's on to London for two days and we'll take in a play. We can't wait! Now we have to book our baggage transfer.

Finished up on 08/09. Lots of rain, mud, and wind but we had a great time. Should have walked West to East. Maybe next time. Norman from Maia Lodge was a great character -- drove us to the local pub (needed an excuse to get a pint) and he also drove us back to Carlisle.

Had a great time in Holmfirth. Local councilman from the Rotary Club took us to see a filming of Last of the Summer Wine. Met Alan Bell (director/producer) and saw the characters Howard and Barry.
