Here's something from someone who has camped along Hadrian's Wall:

I walked the Hadrian's Wall path in March 05 and managed to camp the whole way, although I had to go a bit off trail near Carlisle.

My stops were: - Dandy Dinmot Campsite - just north of Carlisle - Roam and Rest Campsite - Greenhead - Greencarts Farm - approx 2 miles west of Chollerford - A Farm at Heddon-on-the-Wall - I forget the name of the farm, the landlady of the 3 Tuns down the road very kindly rang the farmer to ask if he could put me up.

Both the farms were in the process of building bunkhouses, the farmers were very friendly and let me camp in the garden. Everywhere was deserted in March but I gather it is worth booking well in advance for the summer.

The middle section of the walk, Greenhead to Chollerford is the hilliest and best bit, enjoy

My son & I are hoping to set off last week of June & I'm still in the planning stages.

We are planning to backpack with tent etc.

A couple of questions:- Is there a secure place that I can park the car?

Would it be ok to pitch our lightweight tent en-route (next to "The Wall?")

It's never OK to pitch your tent without permission, especially if someone sees you.

I often have dinner in a pub, couple of beers and stick a couple of miles in after dinner (Unless I can persuade the pub to let me camp in the garden). I set-up camp after 9/10 pm and depart early 6/7 am. Sometimes have set-up as late as 11pm and been gone by 5am. Pick out of the way spots, leave no mess, pack everything out with you. No fires, I don't even use a stove (can't cook). Never had a problem.

Camp on the village green, road edge, within the roman fort etc and you are asking for trouble.

However Hadrians Wall runs close to civilisation a lot of the time which may make picking sites more problematical than on the Dales Way or Penine Way.
