We have decided to split this leg into 2 so we can take in Hellvelyn and Striding Edge.Does anyone know of any places to camp or cheap accom nr Grasmere as we need to use Baggage service to Patterdale? We feel that attempting it all in one day is too much, especially as we're 1st timers and the following day to Shap is a tough day too. thanks

Rosthwaite to Grasmere is an easy day. I was in Grasmere (as were many others C2C'er by early afternoon). I sat in Grasmere for 3 / 4 hours before climbing upto to Grisedale Tarn to wild camp.

Had the weather of been nicer I would of gone up over Hellvelyn and descended Swiral Edge to wild camp at Red Tarn. Waking up with the imposing view of Hellveyln above would be awesome! Also if you camped at the far end you could scramble up the gulley to the summit in less than 45 minutes and have your breakfast on the top smile

I wouldn't like to tackle Striding Edge with a big bag in all but perfect conditions.

As to your actual question, I'm not so sure. Do the baggage people only drop off at Grasmere or Patterdale? If they drop of elsewhere change the route and come off the [un]official route. Grasmere > Striding Edge > Patterdale would be a very short day anyway.
