So guys, as long distance walkers...what do we really want in a pub after a hard days slog on the hills?
These are a few of my needs...

1. Real ale.
2. Log fire.
3. Camping within staggering distance.
4. Freshly cooked food with doorstep chips.
5. Good atmosphere.
6. Other walkers (to exchange tall walking stories).
7. Genuinely friendly staff.

11. Somewhere to sit
12. A table that you can use to write up your journal and to rest your pint(s) of beer. Always a good idea to take a map so that other walkers can spot you or smell you if you haven't had a shower first!

13. No television.
14. No piped music.
15. Nobody sat on stools at the bar obstructing ones way to get a pint.
16. No pool table in the middle of the room so somebodys arse is infront of your face as you're sat at a table.
17. Food served in a separate room.
18. No stupid words like 'drizzled' or 'served on a bed of' on the menu.
19. No fighting.
20. No dress restrictions.
21. No sign about leaving boots outside when it's a fully carpetted pub set in the middle of good walking country.
22. No ex-military landlords.
23. No bar staff ignorant of arithmetic and reliant on a computer till.
24. No bar staff that ask "Anything else?" before they've even started pulling the pint you've just ordered.
25. No plastic flowers in the vases on each dining table.
..... and that's just for starters.

.... and here's a few more, again in no particular order ;
26. Sells pork scratchings, and the proper hard ones not the puffy ones.
27. Toilets to have paper, soap, running water and towell, not air blower.
28. No silly 'Free Beer Tomorrow' or 'Hands Off The Barmaid' signs.
29. No publican who gets offended when I honestly reply 'I've known worse' to his 'Did you enjoy your meal?' question.
30. Any prostitutes working from the pub to do so discreetly.
31, No theme nights, karaoke or drag evenings.
32. No food serving staff that come out with 'Enjoy your meal' parrot fashion whenever they put a plate on a table.
33. A landlord who opens the pub early for you when you arrive before the official opening time.
34. Not full of football supporters or other thugs.
35. The main entrance not to be surrounded by smokers with their own smoke screen.
36. No bar staff that say 'No problem' in response to anything you say.
37. Full pints to be served everytime, and without having to ask for a 'top up'.
38. No drug dealing, or drug taking.
39. No noisy fruit machines.
40. Within a few minutes walk of a railway station.

41. Open when you need it to be i.e. not just from 7pm (White Swan before new owners)!
42. Fresh sandwiches and snacks to take away.
43. Weather information available.

When you order a pint of Black Sheep, they don't say "we are out"

Can I be more modest and ask for a pub to still actually be there. I am sure that on a few occasions out walking I've headed for a big blue tankard on the map to find that the pub closed down last year. That can be quite annoying.

Actually - can I just change the subject slightly and say something else I find annoying (just to fit in with the curmudgeonliness of this thread) - when you go to buy a cup of tea from a cafe in a station - and they ask - do you want any cakes or pastries? That winds me up something rotten - you've got all your cakes and pastries out there - if I want them, I'll ask for them - does anyone actually ever say - oh silly me - I forgot - I actually want your cakes and pastries!!!

Curmudgeon over.

I've just found the Gadjet Show video clip of the Active 10 Satmap GPS I was talking about.
