What is the considered opinion of the weather on the Pennines in mid March? Will be taking a tent but will use available YHA/B&B along the way!

Expect lying snow in patches, or indeed complete cover, on the highest ground.
Expect precipitation in the form of snow.
Expect temperatures below zero degrees Celsius.
Expect significant wind chill.
Expect frozen ground (use good sleeping bag and Thermarest).
Expect strong winds and rain.
Expect wet conditions underfoot.
Expect poor visibility.
You might be luckier than all that, but you should expect all of it.
Be aware that many B&Bs and hostels will not be open.
Be aware that daylight hours mid-March are only from about 6am to 6pm.
A few hardy souls do the PW at that time of year, but it's not easy. Another month on, it's more pleasant.

I did the Cumbria Way from Carlisle to Ulverston as a non stopper two years ago in March. It didnt really start to lose light untill 8pm, but by 8.30 it was dark. Very wet weather and strong winds going over Stake Pass at the head of Langdale around midnight, but during the daylight hours it was good walking weather.
As a matter of fact I am considering doing a North to South trip during March too, as I didnt get to do it this year.
However as Stottie says, best be prepared for for anything.
Dave.

Sounds like fantastic weather for March walking. I'll be leaving Australian summer of 35-40'C. Going to be a nice shock to the system!
