Mick,
You may have seen my other post. On the way to Haystacks yesterday, and on the forest track which forms part of the C2C, I took a slanting little path from just beyond the Pillar Rock footbridge. This leads up to Scarth Gap and cuts off a big corner from the normal path down to the Ennerdale forest Track near Black Sail Hut. Its use especially in descent however could be troublesome to sore feet as its is particularly stony.
I was thinking of your choice of Haystacks rather than Loft Beck as a route and came to the conclusion that although saving some distance, numerous switchbacks and twists and turns including low grade scrambling would add to time rather than saving any. Just my opinion anyway. Cheers.
Dave.

Cheers Dave,
yes that was the path I had in mind - I'm thinking the scramble will be off Haystacks? As I remember I used hands here and there coming down Loft Beck back on the '06 attempt (but this may have been more down to that bad knee), but that was pretty slow too.
I think my best bet is to take a look on my next recce... then try and judge what it would be like as a last day on shot legs. As you observe it'll probably not save any time, but I'll take a look anyway as I know the LB route.
Little un's got a cracked head - spent 200 renewing the head gasket and skim and 'crack test'(which didn't find it!) - I only mention this as it's not much use as a support car at present till I get it sorted properly (source another head) which puts paid to a December weekend...
thanks Dave
mick
