I forgot to say thank you to slowcoach as I didn't know that was the reason for them being discontinued, I had assumed that OS wanted us to buy more maps.

RT stands for "ratione tenurae" which I believe means "by virtue of tenancy". They are public highways (either by foot, horse of vehicular) which are maintained by the tenant over whose land they pass but who, in turn, can reclaim the money from the landowner. These are amongst the oldest public routes, many of which date back to beyond the conquest.

As Billy Norman owned all the land after 1066 he was responsible for maintaining all highways, ports, harbours and church pews. As he gave the land away as reward for services rendered the maintenance then devolved to the new owner. As the land was further subdivided the burden of maintenance passed to the new tenant and so on, but the cost still fell onto the landowner.

These routes were enshrined in common law in 1189 being confirmed in several acts of Parliament since, and they can only be closed by Act of Parliament ... consequently their legal status as public routes still stands today. The OS baulked initially at marking them by now tend to show them, when they don't ignore them, as either unmade up roads, with black dashed lines or as white gaps between features. Don't underestimate them, there are thousands still around today. many provide useful short cuts, if you know where they are!

A good example (but only one of many) is on the North York Moors east sheet (OL27)South Moor farm (900897). There is an RT road going diagonally north east across the fields. The farmer has to maintain it but the Forestry commission has to pay. Old OS maps show the bridleway starting at the farm and travelling north east. The RT was the only access onto the bridleway before it was diverted south ... but the legal line of the RT to the farm still exists. If you look at 903903 where there is a spot height of 231 you will see an RT road going north immediately east of the Forest Drive.
You can read about them by googling their name.

Thanks for the explanation. Just to clarify, I'm not using them myself, but I've seen people asking for them, so my offer stands if anyone wants to borrow them (taking notes of the cautionary info!)

OS 33 and 34 can be downloaded from the internet. I printed these out to scale and then cut them up into days, at the end of each day I would chuck away the used section.

Do you have a link for them? I tried unsuccessfully to locate any.
