In the jungle areas we only wore shorts to cover up the necessities. Continuously sweating in damp underpants caused things to rot and fall off when washed.

One guy used to walk with a pebble to keep his cheeks apart and relieve some of the pain of the sores.

Vaseline would have made the pebble fall out, but would definately have improved muscle tone.

Not only in the jungle. Kenneth Oldham's parties of boys walking the Pennine Way in the 1950s wore shorts but no pants.

One layer of soggy cotton dries more quickly than two.

(Isn't it amazing what we know, when you add it all together!)
