I haven't tried it yet but I've booked into New Barn, Harrup Green Farm, Diggle 01457-873937. It appears to be just down the road from Globe Farm. I'll be there on the night of 11 June but not back home until 29 June. If you want me to let you know what it is like I'll send another message on my return.

New barn is o.k. There is also Sunnyfields
B&B in Diggle. Great view of the moor, bit expensive at 30.00 for a single, foam matt-
ress bed & breakfast a bit on the stingy side. Big plus, there is a great pub 100 yds
away, The Diggle Hotel. Both places will pick you up from the car park at the main rd at the end of your day. Tel 01457 874030.

Another alternative that I'm planning is to catch a bus into Marsden and stay there for the night

There's an hourly bus service from the Great Western Hotel which is only a few yards from where the Pennine Way crosses the A62

John,

Do let us know about Forest Farm. I am staying there in July.

I am particularly interested in how to get there from the trail.

Thanks!

Latic,

Would you mind providing directions from the route?

Thanks!

We reached the Great Western in June to discover it had been sold and was shut! With luck we then found a new pub opened 100 meters further down called the Carraige House. Excellent food and drink, welcome after two very wet days in a tent. They let people camp at the back for free, they intend to make it a proper camp site. If you are not camping there is a bunkhouse and B&B right next door.

Arial,

Sorry I haven't replied sooner but problem with connections.

If you have the Hopkins Guide Forest Farm is shown by a red square.

After passing Swellands & Black Moss reservoirs you head towards Redbrook reservoir. Before you reach this the PW turns left where it meets another path.Where the path meets turn right. In approx 0.5 miles you will reach Mount Rd.Turn right.Go over cattle grid and Forest Farm is on your left opposite the golf course. In morning just retrace yoursteps to rejoin PW.

Have a good trip.

Forest Farm was excellent value, owned by former professional wrestler and his wife. Only problem it's a further mile into Marsden to get an evening meal

New Barn, Harrup Green Farm, Diggle was very good. Very pleasant farmer and wife. Nice meal in Diggle which was only 2/3 minutes down the road. Well worth a try if you are looking for B&B.

In 2004 we detoured into Marsden to stay at Pear Tree Cottage - I would absolutely recommend it to anyone as one of the finest places I have ever stayed. We got the warmest, friendliest welcome you could imagine, were met at the back gate with cups of tea and slippers, absolutely wonderful.

From Marsden you can re-route along the canal and packhorse trail to rejoin the PW.

Hi,
Pear Tree Cottage looks a good alternative. I stayed at New Barn, Harrup Green Farm last year and there was no chance of lifts to and from the PW. Its a long uphill start to the day just to get back on the PW and we were told that we could catch a bus. The bus didnt run the day we were there (sunday).

Hi folks. You could try this as a new alternative to Globe House. I don't think you will be disappointed. A friend of mine has offered his home to PW walkers, having completed the walk himself many years ago.

Wellcroft House
Bleak Hey Nook
Delph
Saddleworth OL3 5LY
Tel: 01457 875017

B & B

They have a Grade II listed Weavers Cottage dated 1768, featuring original beams, stonework and mullioned windows. They have spectacular views of the Castleshaw Valley and Saddleworth with tea making facilities and TV in all rooms. Private lounge with pool table, board games and TV. Wellcroft House is situated directly on the Pennine Bridleway and a 15 minute walk from the Pennine Way.

Evening Meals from 8. You will need to book in advance. Packed lunches also available on request.

Distance from path: 0.6 mile
OS reference: 004094

Hope helpful.

Peter

Just called the Carriage House myself (01484 844 419) and she confirmed camping is free this year if you eat there - next year it will be formalised.
Havent actually clocked it myself but it is on the A62 Marsden side, just north of the junction of Mount Road. From Brun Clough res where the PW comes in, it's less than a km NE along the A62 towards Marsden. (SE 028 102).

Hope this helps

Chris S

PS: Forest Farm guy just told me they've retired from B&B-ing.

I agree with Pedro - I posted on another thread:

Try Wellcroft House, Bleak Hey Nook it is a super B&B with really nice owners. You wont need a bus as it is approx 10 mins walk down a bridleway just after you cross the A62. Telephone Susan Landon on 01457 875017 you will be well looked after and made most welcome at a reasonable price.
I stayed there in April this year - brilliant!
