Just been reading up on the Dales Way and it states that it spans two National Parks, but it says that all the land is privately owned. How does one equate "National Park" with "Privately Owned"?

I also see stated that one must close all gates along the Dales Way path, regardless.

If a gate was just a small gate with the path going through then I would close/secure it. If it was a farmer's gate, i.e. tractor size, then if it was open then I would leave it that way. I guess that if animals were likely to escape onto a road then I would close that but I have never come across that situation.

All land in the UK is owned by someone, either private individuals, estate owners, water authorities and the national trust to name a few.
National park status give the designated area special consideration in regards to developement, land management, protection, tourism etc.

With this being the UK you need to remember that a national park is neither national nor a park!

Seriously though, this does cause a lot of confusion (and problems) in the mind of the public. They equate a national park to a local park and expect to be able to undertake the same activities.

For a brief overview have a look at ...http://www.nationalparks.gov.uk/learningabout/whatisanationalpark.htm#whatisanationalpark

One of the major problems is that their funding is from grants from the government and local authorities. They have very limited opportunities for raising income themselves. So, they are at the mercy of outside sources. This year the average cuts are 21%. Over the next three years it averages 35% Not an easy situation when you are almost entirely dependant upon scare resources.

Gates ..... the rule is quite simple ..... leave them a you find them.

Quite often they are deliberately left open by the landowner for diverse reasons, for example, .... to allow freedom of movement to his stock ..... to allow his to move between fields without getting off his vehicle every time ....etc etc.
