Have just finished a 10 day PW walk, so thought I would post up information and times that may be of use.I went for an ultra lightweight camping option,to maximise daily mileage in the time available,and for the more satisfying fully self-sufficent achievement.Great to have met so many others along the way,but many did'nt look happy under heavyweight packs.

Wore off the start:
Northface Goretex XCR Hedgehog Trail Shoes
Inner and Outer pair Socks,Pants,Ron Hill Trackster trousers,Thermal T-Shirt,Peaked Cap.
The trail shoes are worth an extra 6 miles a day,as boots are too heavy a weight to swing around on your legs all day.With most boggy sections now flagstoned,I never had any water come above sole level the whole route.
No cooking gear carried,so cold breakfasts and takeway food,plus hot meals in pubs and cafes.
Tues 25th May Dry,Cool,Cloudy.Edale-Wessenden Head 24 miles.
Came up from London in the morning,via Doncaster (£19single),and started off from Edale at 11.15.Did the classic route up Grindbrook as it's more impressive.Kinder Downfall 13.00 was completely dried up. Snake Road 14.30,Bleaklow top 15.40,Crowden 17.40,Black Hill 19.45,Wessenden Head farm 21.00.I camped by the stream on the flat grass at the base of Blakeley Clough.
Wed 26th May.Cold North Wind,Showers.Wessenden-Ponden 30 miles
Set off 07.00,Standedge 08.00,Windy Hill 09.20-useful tea and burger van in car park,White House Inn 10.40,Stoodley Pike 12.20,slow in/out of the steep Calder Valley,Colden Aladins Cave shop 15.00/15.40 for tea and food,Walshaw Dean 17.20.Top Withins 18.40,Ponden 19.20.
Thurs 27th May,Cold.North wind,Showers.Ponden-Malham 23.5miles
Ponden 07.10,Cowling 09.20(no shops on the route),Lothersdale 10.30,Thornton 12.20 (no shops seen),Gargrave 14.10-15.15 (into cafe,then Co-op for food restock),Malham 17.40.I camped on the site near the cove(£6),then a choice of pubs for a big evening meal.No food shops in Malham unfortunately.
Fri 28th May,Cold.North wind,Sunny. Malham-Hawes 28 miles
Third cold morning start at around 3 degrees.Great scenery around the cove,plus Fountains Fell & Peny Ghent.Malham 07.45,Tarn 09.00,Fountain Fell 10.40,PenyGhent 12.10,Jackdaw Hole 13.40,Cam End 15.20,Dodd Fell 16.30,Hawes 18.50.Short of food all day,thanks to no shops at Malham,straight to the Fish&Chip shop in Hawes on arrival.Shops in Hawes all close by 6pm,so had to wait until 8.00am next morning to restock. Camped on the Gayle site (£5),take the shortcut path through the cattle market.Choice of several pubs.
Sat 29th May.Rain,mist all day. Hawes-Baldersdale 28 miles
Gayle depart 07.45,Hawes 08.40,Gt Shunner Fell 10.40,Thwaite 12.20,Keld Cafe 13.30/14.20,Tan Hill 16.00,Gods Bridge 18.20,Baldersdale 19.30.Prtty lonely section from Tan Hill,as did'nt see another person the rest of the day.Camped next to the reservoir,all wet stuff dried in the wind next morning.
Sun 30th May Dry.North Gale easing.Baldersdale-Dufton 27.5miles
Baldersdale 07.45,Middleton 10.10/10.40(food restock at Co-op),High Force 13.10/13.40,Cauldon Snout 15.40,High Cup Nick 17.30,,Dufton 18.55.Path for 2 miles from High Cup Nick is a rocky roller coaster,amking slow going.Camped on the village site (£6),and into the pub for a big dinner.YHA advertises breakfasts here for the campers.
Mon 31st May,Dry Cool,Sun/Cloud. Dufton - Kirkhaigh 24 miles
At last a good walking day,essential for the Cross fell views.Dufton 08.40,Knock Old Man 10.40,Cross Fell 12.20/12.45,Gregs Bothy 13.10 (useful bad weather overnight stop if required),Long Man Hill 14.20/14.45,Garrigill 16.15 (pub now closed down),Alston 17.40/18.10 - food restock at Co-op,Kirkhaigh 19.40. Camped on old railway line embankment.
Tues 1 June.Rain to 16.00. Kirkhaigh-Once Brewed 21.5 miles
Kirkhaigh 08.15,Lambley 10.25,Greenhead pub 13.40/14.30 (no shops seen here),then the tough switchback walk along Hadrians wall,with lots of stops to look around,Once Brewed 18.30.Came off the wall at Peel, went in the YHA and booked a morning breakfast,then walked back up road to Winshields campsite (£5),before adjouring to the pub for the evening.
Wed 2 June.Dry,Sunny at last!
Winshields 07.25,Once Brewed 07.35/08.15,Ladyhill 11.00,Bellingham 14.10/15.10. Food and water restock at the Co-op, and I leave with a huge packweight as have food and extra water for 1.5 days.Take the alternative path past Hareshaw.B6320 16.40,Whitley Pike 18.15.Needed compass across Lough Shaw and Deer Play.Path up to Brownrigg Head (19.00) is the worst on the whole PW,200 foot climb up rocks,bog and dung,the solution being to walk up the top of the wall.Enter Kielder Forest 19.25,boring rocky road down to Blakehopeburnhaugh 20.40,then camped by river just afterwards 20.50.
Thurs 3rd June Dry.Sunny.Warm Blakehope- Kirk Yetholm 31miles
Blakehope depart 06.50,Byrness 07.30 (garage and cafe now closed down),Chew Green 09.40,Black Halls 10.20,Beefstand Hill 11.05,Windy Gyle 13.10/13.40,Auchope Cairn 15.45,The Schil 17.05,and finally Kirk Yetholm 19.03.- 9 days 7hrs 48min from the start. Superb last day long ridge walk over the Cheviots, with great views in all directions, and lots of other day walkers out to meet.Camped on the Town campsite (excellent £5),before back the The Border Hotel for a few beers and collect a certificate.
Next morning I took the 09.20 81 Bus to Kelso,12.07 45 Bus to Berwick,then East Coast trains back to London (advance single was quoted at £53,but booking it as three seperates via Darlington and Doncaster got it down to £26.
Highlights of the walk were Standedge Ridge,Malham Cove,PenyGhent,High Force,Cross Fell,Hadrians Wall and the Cheviot Ridge.Although a tight schedule,it did give enough time to stop and look around, but was dependant on early starts.Having previously walked it in 1978,it is much easier now with well marked paths,and many miles of flagstones (40 miles??) over previous bog ridden stretchs,and the most appalling over Featherbed/White/Black Moss now bypassed via Wessenden.I only needed the compass about four times;Kinder,Cross Fell,Round Hill/Black Hill before Greenhead and Deerplay.Applying some sports nutrition theory is very useful in doing high daily mileages,I reloaded with simple sugar carbohydrates every two hours or so,which worked very well. Also did stretching exercises end of each day on my leg muscles, so aches at all each morning.The three days before I started,I rubbed Surgical Spirit around all risk areas around my toes and heels, so did the whole route without a single blister,which made it fully enjoyable.
