Well the B7B is booked for Monday and Tuesday nights (6th & 7th Sept) in St. Bees. (West Coast B&B)
My wife is going with me and the plan is to walk a bit of the coast path on Monday afternoon, and probably catch a bus to Whitehaven on Tuesday for a look around. Wont be walking a lot, the idea is to have an easy day as I have a big carpet fitting job on, all weekend, and my knees will require some recovery before setting off.
I will leave my wife in bed on Wednesday morning and set off at 4am. I have a packed lunch arranged instead of breakfast.
The long range weather forecast gives some rain later next week, but on the whole doesn't look too bad (fingers crossed).
I will be backpacking as light as pos with a wild camping pack of 13lbs inc sac and food, but not water.
Idea is to get as close to Grisedale Tarn as pos first day and Orton on the second.
If things go bad early on and I am behind schedule by Shap, I will abandon and walk home from there if I can.
Dave.

Good luck Dave, I don't envy you this challenge, but I do admire anyone who attempts such a crossing. Looking forward to hearing that you made it.

Yay! Good luck Dave - hope all goes well for you - I'll be most interested to hear how you get on and look fwd to reading your account. I'm thinking days will be tight now were losing the summer light. A bit of light rain will be good - it's been v hot here in Derbyshire these last couple of days.
Again good luck mate - I'll be there in spirit at least,
very good wishes

Thanks to all for the encouragement.
I will try and do the same as Mick did and report my progress on Twitter.
You will find me there as 'dav657'.
Worryingly the sac is getting heavier after deciding I need something warmer for these cooler evenings, and I had forgotten to include socks! However I carried 30lbs daily doing the PW, so at worst I will only be just over half that, but walking an average 8 miles a day more.
Trust me to pick up a good paying Carpet fitting job just before I go, my legs are really feeling it lugging all that and underlay etc up to the first floor. Hoping 2 days off beforehand will be enough.
Dave.

Thanks all for the encouragement, i will need it.
Nice to see you back Tonyk.
Ive done the final sac packing, decided not to take a sleep mat instead use the short insulation pad that forms part of my new OMM 35 litre sac. Just weighed it at 16.25 lbs, not inc water, but absolutely everything else. I think I can cope with that, if I find it too heavy I can abandon gear and pick up later.
Wearing North face hedgehog shoes, come rain or shine. Just got to check the weather forecast now, so next time I am on here, it will be to report success or failure.
Dave.

I think Dave has a few tents to go at, but think he will be using his Terra Nova Laser Elite at around 700gms. Pretty sure he prefers tents to bivis...

Hi shinsplints - here's latest post on Twitter:

"Travellers rest grassmere 1956hrs trying for grisedale yarn after a brew"

He should be up there by now - hopefully he'll be pitching at the outflow of the tarn (probably the best spot to find in the dark) as it's midweek and schools have gone back.
A good first day. He's heading for Sunbiggin Tarn area tomorrow - a wild camp or maybe Bents Farm facilities(?) might spur him on to get that bit nearer to KS? The effort will start to kick in on day 3 enroute to Richmond.
I've been checking my watch all day mentally plotting his progress and wishing I was there! The weather's been ideal here in Derbyshire - lets hope Cumbria has been kind...
anyone seen the forecast for up there?

Footprint maps make it 41m to Grisedale tarn, though miles 10,11 and 12 are via the Flat Fell route - so it may a be a little more via Dent, though they look about the same flat...

Nothing as yet today... if on schedule, he should be around Kidsty Pike about now

well I reckon if Dave got away for say half three he'll have covered another 12-13 miles which will certainly put him where he wanted to be... (not sure quite where that would be as my maps ar in the car as I've been following his progress all day at work! lol)

...looking at it and the time at Shap - he may well have got as far as Smardale Bridge last night (at 16m from Shap and 78m in total) - this will put him well on schedule for Keld at around Midday

no tweet from Dave today... he would have had signal at KS, but would be wanting to press on maybe. Probably won't come into signal until near Richmond..? As I remember there is a brief area between Cringley Bottom and Reeth for signal (though mine's Orange) otherwise 'tis a low signal day... hopefully he'll be between Marrick and Richmond - Applegarthish?

no word today as yet...
The above Tweet is of course yesterday's schedule, so sounds like he intended to get to Richmond or maybe he sent that from Richmond last night...
If so, and he's been able to patch his feet up this morning and has not slowed too much he could be around Danby Wiske - this allowing for a later start and a 2mph pace - so still has a good chance of reaching his Day4 destination of Clay Bank top...
It'll be a mental struggle all day and be very tempting to put down at Lord Stones - allowing for the 3 climbs in the morning, but then adding that to an already long last day...
c'mon Dave...

.. thanks - thought I was talking to myself - (usually am mind...)
no tweet from Dave today - could get one in morning yet though...
it may be the heel blisters giving him trouble...
Shinsplints - do you know something we don't? Personal texts maybe?
With bad feet he could well have got to Lord Stones tonight...
It's down to being able to dig that bit deeper - that which eluded me at Grisedale Tarn with just 40m to go... You almost feel you could piss on the finish but the will seems to have drained away...
cheers

LWM, No personal texts mick. just from your previous message from slogger's feet playing up.
Quite fancy having a go at the 5 day attempt myself.
Already bought some new trail/running shoes

shoes.http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/run/8/Nike_Zoom_Red_Rocks_II_Shoes/5360051359/?referid=frogoog&source=googleps

Do you reckon these will stand up to the punishment mick. They are getting great reviews with people buying them for trail walking instead of running.

Hope the weather's as good up there as it is here in Derbyshire now for that triumphant limp down into the Bay and well-earned pint!!
Something that's been so elusive for me going the other way... and I'm 5 years younger than Dave!
No doubt about it - a fantastic achievement, averaging 38 miles a day walking only, for five days and being self-sufficient for shelter. Funny how I helped inspire Dave and now he's inspiring me lol!!
Looking forward to reading his account...

I was asked to realign some signposts near Grosmont today. I started work on the ones along the C to C at approx 12 noon. During the first hour a chap from Wakefield passed me on a
12 day crossing, a couple from Northampton on a 15 day crossing and a Canadian on a 14 day crossing. Then, about 1pm, along the road, in short, moving at quite a pace came a single chap, bald but carrying (not using) 2 poles. I wondered if this was Slogger and started speaking to him. He told me that he had left on Wednesday and had to be at Bay by 4pm as he was booked on the Sherpa.

It turned out that he was from Brighton and had only decided to do the walk last Sunday. He was using B and B arranged by Sherpa.

I asked him if he had seen anyone else on a 5 day crossing and he said that he had been speaking to a man close to The Lion earlier on. He was having trouble with his feet but was determined to make it.

Blimey - that was some effort. Well done Dave.

Only just come back from 10 days in Keswick so missed the day to day suspense of Lightweight Mick's postings!

Hope Dave's not stubbed his toe like I did...
After my recent attempt my feet had never been so red and swollen - so much so, I thought I'd got infected blisters. The Practice nurse looked 'em over next day and said they were okay but to keep an eye on them... next morning I stubbed my big toe on the kitchen table which was far worse than the swollen feet had been, yikes - I nearly went through the ceiling!!
It may have been dislocated as the missus stood on my foot after about a week (in the caravan on hol...), I pulled back amid a shower of abuse and expletives she won't forget in a hurry... but next morning no pain... GONE, just like that... then I did my back in... which lasted about a week - then I did the other side, which still isn't right...

Anyway, here's hoping Dave's recovering without any like complications

Thank you to all, for all your kind comments, especially Mick, I didn't realise so many were interested.
Mick, no I haven't got away with anything, suffering big time with the feet, swollen, blistered, blood blister under big toe nail, but no big deal all fully expected on a trip like that but I could do without the open ball of foot blisters that are making walking difficult at the moment.
You get what you pay for, simple as that.
I will do a full report shortly, including to mention the other 5 day contender that SC came across.
Dave.

Hello Dave,

Congratulations on your achievement!!!

I've been following your progress (as reported by Mick--thanks!), and have been rooting for you. Although I am a slow-paced walker myself, I really appreciate that you set such a strong challenge for yourself and met it...with several hours to spare. Great job.

Ken

This one's for Mick:

I know you've always done your 5-day attempts solo, but would you ever consider doing it with a walking partner; for example, with Dave (assuming he'd ever want to put himself through that again!)? Or would that not be your style or somehow lessen the achievement? (It wouldn't, in my opinion.)

Just wondering what you think about such things...

Ken

P.S.: I quite enjoyed your youtube reports on your scouting trips...

Hi Ken,
the solo thing is becoming something of an individual quest - I think it's about getting down to that 'inner self' for me these days which seems to be all the more elusive in company though I do still do shorter walks with 'she inside - the sensible one' and Molly, the Yorkie.
Glad you enjoyed the recce vids - not sure the 5 day video diary will see the light of YouTube though, ha ha, Day 3 alone runs to 2 hrs 20 mins and I returned with 176 clips. For the Lakes recce vids I used a free edition of 'VideoPad' from NCH Software. I've started Day 0 of the 5 dayer in Windows Movie Maker, but it's not nearly as good as the NCH editor. I might just cut it down to 'highlights' (except there weren't any!)
thanks
mick

Dave you must be feeling well chuffed! - more so when the pain subsides a bit more anyway...
It was such a shame on my attempt to see it slipping away on Day 4. As it got dark on day 3, just 4m short of Shap I felt I could pull it back, but it wasn't to be.
You did really well to keep on schedule Dave - splendid effort mate. I'd got your tweets coming to my phone - you had me/us going after Richmond I can tell you!
very good wishes
mick

Bit (very) blustery on the high fells today. Quite unpleasant when the rains came as well

I promise I will do a full report shortly. My feet are my main concern at the moment, I have big holes on the ball of both of them, the nurse at the treatment clinic was shocked at how deep they were and there is very little of skin layer left. It is going to be a week or so before I can put any weight on them, they are fully bandaged. My wife is being an absolute angel, she is not used to seeing me laid up like this.
I am sure there are people who don't understand why we put ourselves through things, that we are well aware can result in problems like this. For me the extreme nature of the challenge brings extreme satisfaction, not only in the success but also in the trying. As Mick says you reach that inner strength, that until you attempt something similar, you will never discover.
Re: After Richmond - There wasn't going to be anymore after there, I had reluctantly decided to abandon, but by a fluke, searched the depths and carried on.
Dave.

Dave, just think of the achievement to try and dull the pain, that and the alcohol! I'm sure you'll be back on your feet soon and planning your next excursion.

Dave- I am really interested in your thinking about the crossing- were you a "purist" sticking as far as poss to AWs original route? Did you allow yourself any shortcuts ? What were the conditions you set yourself ? I appreciate that you probably just want to rest right now but when you do the write up could you include a few thoughts on that side of it?

Many thanks and well done again,

Ian
