Searching my local Morrisons for both items it transpires neither are now available. Granose have taken over Direct Foods (makers of Sosmix) and have a similar sausage-making stuff so I'm going to give this a go. If I go with this option, Cuppa Soup/Smash mixture will be favoured. I've tried making Oxtail Cup-soup and adding 30gm Smash which makes a tasty fortifying modge(approx 200kcal)
the thinking is: boil pint of water - half to food/half to hot drink.
Of course I'll be supplementing where possible - pork pies, cheese, snickers etc. but will have something to fall back on this time other that muesli and cereal bars and not be too dependent on bar meals.
Any other ideas?

Porridge (oats are light in weight) and dried fruit.
Soak overnight in pan and heat next morning for quick getaway. Can eat cold if really in a rush.

Two good ones!
Pork scratchings - 680 calories per 100g (high protein too) - high salt content (?) so could need plenty extra fluid.
In the past I've used to good effect the instant oat variety porridge fortified with dried milk - just add half the pan of boiling water - other half to tea. Actually cooking the stuff in pan means for washing-up! And there may not be enough water to hand -(good stuff if on a camp site though)
I'll check out the cal content of the instant hot oat cereal - I seem to remember it has same no. of calories.
cheers

I bought a bag of Pork Scratchings t'other day 622kcals per 100gms - come with 'health warning': ONLY RECOMMENDED FOR PEOPLE WITH STRONG HEALTHY TEETH. May need to find emergency dentist in Kikby Stephen or before!
Also came back from Tesco with honey roasted Cashew nuts at 600kcal per 100gms - salt: trace. Hmm, may be an aquired taste though... and plain have around 600 cals anyway.
Instant Porridge still available 360 per 100gm - same as whole oats.
Sosmix replacement tried - not as good as old variety IMO. But could still be useful pre-seasoned.
Also tried Veg. cup-a-soup - stir in 30gm Smash(Cheddar&Onion) - add grated cheese - delicious! cals: 83+99+cheese (400 per 100gms or Parmesan (dried) at 485Kcals) This would accept butter too, though butter doesn't travel well, but 20gms of butter would add another 148 cals.
The pork scratchings reconstitute quite well stirred into cup-a-soup too.
Reckon I'll need to work on 5000 calories a day so as not to fail at the eating...
cheers

Yes, it's the litigious society we now live in that has caused those health warnings on scratching packets.
Just a fraction of a second now, so you can't edit posts anymore.

I broke a tooth in half whilst eating the damned things and it cost almost £200 to have it crowned.Be careful!

Have you tried the body building "shakes" and replacement meals, very lightweight and also well balanced in terms of carbs, protein and fat.

LWM,
Thanks for the social map thing on Facebook. I finally got to read your account of your last 5 day attempt. Considering the conditions it is to your great credit that you didnt abandon it once you realised that it wasnt on. Its a great boost when things are going well and you are slightly ahead of time, but its a real downer when time is rapidly being lost and it become glaringly obvious that catching up is not going to happen. So I say well done anyway.
Dave.
