Thanks Mick.
Whilst on exercise in Germany when in the army, we had been on the move on foot for 3 days and nights when we were allowed to get some rest in a Copse as we were absolutely falling asleep on our feet. Snuggling up in my sleeping bag a Harrier Jump Jet buzzed us and sprayed us with water, simulating a Gas attack.
We had to done gas masks after that. The air canister was on one side of the mask and I almost suffocated when I fell asleep and rolled my head over to the side cutting off my air supply.
I awoke with a start as the CO2 levels rapidly built up.
Dave.

Hi Mick

Are you familiar with the Gatewood Cape produced by Six Moons Designs. Most probably a bit heavy at 300g for you but I have found it really good in low wind conditions.
Plusses: Combined fully enclosed shelter (with room for all gear), rain gear, pack cover. Wonderful for lunch stops in the rain. Can sit up in it.
Minuses: not great in strong winds (a belt around it does help).

Not sure how much of it is NT? The forestry work in progress last year made the ROW difficult to trace - I ended up on the lower forest track near to Norwood Fm.
As noted on the video clip the path is well defined on the ground to begin with. After meeting the forestry track and following it for a few hundred yards, I cut off right again down through the trees (a bit of orienteering!)- maybe too soon, and there may be evidence on the ground after all?
I could do with coming up for yet another w/end recce lol,

I haven't actually walked this path.

My gut feeling (without evidence) is that the FC have overplanted the path in times past and are now relying on walkers using firebreaks/rides to follow the approximate route. This happens quite a lot on the lesser used paths, although, in fairness to them, after felling they do reinstate it and then avoid planting it again. This has happened throughout the north, the rules 40 years ago being somewhat different to today. The problem nowadays is that, with the increasing use of GPS, walkers are coming wise to the ploy!

I will pass the info onto the relevant ranger.

Dave, I reckon that army training stood you in good stead last year!

Not familiar with that make Mark, but did consider getting a poncho tarp last year. Many of these set-ups assume you'll be using trek poles.
I spent some time last year rigging up lines and boning up on knots, only to abandon the idea and use 2 sm. lightweight poles in the final choice.
Warm and wet seems to be the way for me - though I did pack a plastic poncho for emergency use (be useless in wind though too) - as was the tarp without a pertex (PHD do Drishell) outer on the sleeping bag. With so little kit getting the balance right is tricky...

SC, from Mark's post, it may be easier to follow from the Arnecliffe end - I might have lost it due to 'work in progress' last year. At the top of the wood it's too steep to use machines and so it's left undisturbed and remains quite delightful.
Thanks for that btw - though it's a steeper climb up than the 'dogleg' by the radio masts if we could encourage a few more Coasters on there it would help to reinstate the path on the ground,
cheers

Started plotting my own route here:

http://explore.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/

...only at 50k scale though (yet?) - would be more accurate at 25k... I though O/S would be better than the competition to be honest - ie. can't adjust waymark, can't edit route, no aerial view - has a 'print this route' option though...
What we really want is a 25k plotter that takes into account contours! (that would take a clever bit of Java script though...)
cheers

Hi Mick

In planning my JOGLE attempt I have been using the Walkhighlands.co.uk walk planner which will give you 1:25k for the entire UK along with adjustable waymarks and export as gpx.

Thanks for that Mark - I've registered there and plotted the 1st stage - much more accurate, though maybe not as user friendly..?
I can't seem to add the route to 'my diary', but I'll def. have another go..
The profile feature is good and the est time for route via Naismith a useful feature - nice one
I can see Dave has a presence there too!
cheers

Yes Mick been a member for a while now, really good forum.
Thought you may be interested in the route between Thirlmere and Rosthwaite that I was going to take on my crossing. In the end I got walking with a couple so went with them over Greenup instead. Ive done it as E-W.
I'm sure you are familiar with the site but look for 5 day C2c (E-W) day 5.
