Thanks for that Harland. I am glad you enjoyed it.
All I have to do now is persuade Mrs RT to let me off the leash again, and I can do it again.

Congratulations on finishing! Really enjoyed reading this, and viewing the pics - so much so that I have just phoned the present wife to agree to doing the crossing again ourselves in 2015 when we will have hopefully retired!

A great account of a wonderful walk, laughed through most of it and had to re-read most sections. Sorry to hear about the painful feet, but you can't expect to do such a walk without some pain somewhere.

I have done the walk twice and am thinking of doing it again... well that's if I can get my walking buddies to join me.

Currently doing the Angles way (Suffolk/Norfolk boarders), no hills... well a couple of hillocks, I live right on the route and decided to get those boots out and do a section of it most weeks.

Ha, ha, quite true. I can see navigation is going to be a problem with no hills to get a bearing on, however my wife should be ok, all she needs is shops in the vicinity and she just zero's in.

We don't have them thar hills to navigate with, but the old rivers and a few cows and horses help!! I have posted the first tow days walking on Other Walks - Angles Way if you want to know how the land lies here.

I hope you enjoy you visit, just give your wife your flexible friend and leave her to it.

MY flexible friend -NO chance, she has her own.
This is her trip and her choice. It's just a break to cheer her up after she suffered an Epilepsy relapse a couple of weeks ago.
She had gone 12 years completely free of any type of seizure, then had two bad ones, out of the blue one evening and spent twp nights in hospital.
The frightening thing was, I couldn't get to her at first, as she was on the floor in the bathroom with her head right behind the door and in such a position that she could had suffocated, had i not managed to get my hand in and turn her head.
Two nights beforehand I had been on an overnight non stopper walk, and I dread to think the outcome if it had happened while I was away. Needless to say I won't be going on any overnighters for some time.
She if fine now, she soon bounces back and is looking forward to our trip.
Dave.

Good entertaining read on your blog!
I came over Nine Standards Rigg about a week earlier in mist and rain, and saw those bamboo canes with red tape on. I remember thinking,I bet a number of people are going to follow those canes,as they gradually curved off route!!!

Sorry to hear about the wife's problem, lets hope she recovers and is clear again for many more years. Sounds like a very scarey episode for both of you. Enjoy the time away.

I am a truck driver by trade,so spend hours in my own company.
It means I talk to myself alot.
You can always tell a truck driver when you meet him. He never shuts up.
I just transfered my inane mutter to the written word and the blog was born.I also kept a diary that I wrote each evening, and used it as notes to flesh out and remind.

CAn anyone tell mr why, after three months,my heels are starting to hurt again.
I have not even thought about putting the boots back on yet,but if I wander round town for a couple of hours in my walking shoes, even with gel insoles,by the time I get home,my heels are fit to die.
Help!
Will they recover in 20 months?

Has the walk led to development of hard and thick skin on the outer corner of the heels. I suffer from this. It is the heel trying to protect itself for future punishment.
The hard thick skin then presses on the softer underlying tissue causing pain.
I have been applying Compeed Heel cream for the last couple of months and my heels are now in the best condition than they been in years.
Walked a fast paced Yorkshire 3 Peaks today in the heat, and no heel or foot discomfort at all.

SC. NO stones. Chucked inthe sea at RHB
Dave. All the hard skin that developed has gone.
The pain seem to be at the front of the heel pad,and between the pad and the heel bone.

If the pain is underneath the heels, you MIGHT be suffering from planarfasciitis (not sure of the spelling, but I do remember the pain).
Go see a podiatrist (a foot expert) and get some advice/exercises - you can probably do some of them while driving the truck. It should clear up in 20 months, but (I kid you not) if it IS planar-whatever-the-heck it can take ages without expert intervention.

As Stottie said, its possibly down to Plantar Fasciitis.A nasty condition and it can last for years if not treated properly.

I have found the following exercises to be very helpful, especially the one with the tennis ball under the foot as this releases the myofascial tissue.

I've had the Planter thing a few years back, it was painful, one tell tale sign is that its always at its worse first in the morning when you get out of bed, you hobble around for a while and it slowly gets better over the day.
Do you get the pain worse first thing RT ?

The pain only comes back if I have been out wandering about on my feet for a couple of hours or more.
I'm thinking amputation may be a bit drastic............and if I am honest, may cause more of a hinderence than putting up with it.
I don't want to have to change my boots to a smaller size just yet.

I'm going to vote against plantar fasciitis. When I had it from running, it always hurt first thing in the morning, or after sitting for a while. When I would run, it would hurt the first quarter mile or so but then loosened up. So it sounds like yours is just the opposite.

I think I'm going to go with SC's diagnosis.

The few cases of Planter Ive heard of were always worse first thing in the morning so it wont be that. I'd go to the doctor and get your feet looked at. A friend had some kind of tendonitus (?) which came on after walking a while, he was a meter reader and was in bad pain at the end of his day wandering around. That took some months to heel up and I think was eventually curved with quarterzone injections (not nice).
Good luck

I had plantar fascitis during and after my second C2C and have had recurrences ever since. It is inflammation of the plantar tendon which runs under the heel and connects to the achilles. While I agree it is often (usually) there in the morning, presumably because the tendon has tightened during the night, I also get it after standing for a long time (hour or so). Hiking in good boots seems to ease it but not ordinary shoes.

One exercise I find very good is to (lie down) curl your toes up as far as you can and hold it for 10 seconds - repeat 10 times. You should feel the achilles stretch and it also stretches the plantar. The beauty of this one is that you can do it in bed when you wake up thus having an excuse for those extra few minutes.

I would definitely go to see a foot doctor, you might need special inserts instead of the commercial gel heel pads.

Geof

I'd go along with the PF as a possible cause of the pain.
I had it quite badly many years ago after hard running on on icy roads. My feet were automatically gripping as it was so slippery, this caused the fascia of my feet to become excessively strained and the pain began the following morning.
I tried ice foot baths, rolling my feet on a bottle and just resting best I could, but nothing worked until i purchased a book called 'Doctor your own feet'.
In this book it showed how to strap up and support the foots arch.
I had to do this every day and got through loads of tape, but it worked and I was back running within days.
I had to keep strapping my feet up for at least a month, even so.

The variety of different suggestions means that you really need to get a medical opinion quickly, as, if rest is the cure, this is less of a problem for most people over a winter period.

Delaying a diagnosis could prolong the cure

I'm responsible for a few peeks at your blog - I read it before we went in September and just had another look as you mentioned Loft Beck. I wanted to see what the views were like as sadly we saw nothing at all the day we were there, being the worst weather of our trip! Closely followed by Nine Standards, and Kidsty Pike was left out altogether because of the wind but that's another story! Now, how to see them all... oh may just have to do the walk again, though knowing our luck the bad weather would be on the same days!

With regards to your feet, I was diagnosed by my GP back in January with plantar fasciitis (without him even looking at my feet!)and it went after doing exercises, best one rolling foot over bottle (of wine, empty!)It unfortunately came back 2 weeks before we did the Coast to Coast and this time I went straight to a podiatrist worrying that I'd have problems on the walk. He said he didn't think I'd ever had plantar fasciitis and had got collapsed foot arches. Luckily wearing my leather boots every day with a light support seemed to work and I didn't suffer, but definitely get it sorted now, I was very worried that I'd struggle because of the wrong diagnosis.

Why did you have small dogs on top of Lining Crag?

Ive just inspected the soles on my walking shoes that I used for both C2C trips.
I used to do this regularly when I was running, not simply to check for wear but for any changes in gait.
I am a heel lander and slightly heavier on my right foot.
The wear pattern on my right shoe showed central heel deteriation, whilst on my left, the wear was more to the inside of the heel.
My shoes have never shown inside of heel wear over outside of heel before.
This pattern relates only to these walking shoes although I have many pairs of all types of walking footwear.
The thing is, from the first time you wear footwear, walking over some distance, the intial wear pattern that is started sets how the shoe will mostly wear from that first walk on.
It is like a car tyre that is wearing on the inside. Swapping it to the rear wheels wont make it wear evenly, it will always favour that initial wear area.
What I think happened to set off this wear pattern on these shoes, was because I purposely altered my gait in an attempt to relieve the pain from those horendous ball of foot blisters that I suffered. I will keep them just for messing about in now as i think they are finished for any serious walking.
Dave.

You will think you have already read this bit....then a new line will appear as if by magic.
Keep your eyes peeled and your oranges looking out.

The blog is now complete to my satisfaction.
Please feel free to leave comments.
If you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it then all is well.

There WILL be another one in 2013.
But it won't be nearly as witty or insightful.

I hope this one is useful to any future C2Cers.

Really enjoyed reading your blog, agree with you also it was emotional at the end, the places, people, and friendships you make all come back once you hit the Bay. We walked c2c in May 2011, it was tough at times but we've decided to do it all over again in May 2012, and we can't wait! If you havenít already have a read of our blog, you'll find 2011's story if you scroll down.

Well done mate, really good walk story!

It is a tough walk, it does catch a lot of people out, especially the Lakes and the North Yorkshire Moors section. Nice to see you are doing it again in 2012, I'm also doing it, but you will be finished, when I'm starting the coast to coast. I can't afford the accommodation, so camping it, but doing ultra light-weight.

Good luck on your walk, to be honest the accommodation is a huge cost, but we found the camping at the end of a long and sometimes wet day really hard. We hit some really bad weather last May also (remember the power cuts in Scotland due to the weather last May?), so managed get in to bunk houses at short notice (called on route), so thatís an option you may want to keep to hand. So we decided to stay in accommodation this year and save up! But you'll still have an amazing walk, camping or not, you'll have to post how you get on, I know we canít' wait!!

I probably book up a couple of youth hostels or bed and breakfast, along the way, on spec. Youth hostels are getting non existing towards the east side of the coast to coast walk, that is Grinton Lodge and Osmotherley, but Grinton Lodge is popular and Osmotherley is up for sale. However, as you say, bunk house look a good idea, so I will keep that mind.

Normally, May is a good month for walking. I remember when I did the coast to coast in May 2009, I had very good weather in the Lakes and the rest of the walk was short showers. The best year for the coast to coast, when I first did it in the second of September 1990, when I had no rain at all in the 11 days. I still have the weather remark's written down in the "A Coast to Coast Walk" by AW of that year and also the prices of the camp-sites, bed and breakfast and youth hostel. Cheapest was Head House farm, Church Houses at £8 and dearest was Bent's farm, but that included evening meal as well. Still, nowadays, I'm happy to camp.

Hi, you are right, May usually is a good month fro walking, hence we've decided that last May was a one off(surely) and we've picked May again, fingers crossed. I see you've walked coast to coast many times, thatís great to know and nice to speak to someone with so much experience of the walk. I have done many Lakeland walks, however May2011 was my and Sarah's first long distance walk, I was surprised, firstly by how thought it was, thought being a pretty experienced as a walker I'd be fine (wrong, suffered aches and pains, in particular with my knee)secondly, how much of an adventure & enjoyable it was, meeting people seeing places.
Is it those things which have kept you coming back for more, despite some of the problems you've hit on route yourself?

I remember this year in August, when I planned the east to west crossing and I got as far as Reeth and called it a day and came back home. Why, maybe several reason (a) lack of funds, (b) boredom, (c) bad weather forecast for the Lakes.

(a)I could of use the overdraft facility on my card to see me through to St. Bees, so that would not of been a problem.

(b) I must admit doing east to west is not the same as west to east, probably a sense of going against the grain and not socializing with the many c2c'ers, as you would from west to east, to me that is the beauty of the coast to coast. Although, I did the east to west crossing in 1992 and don't think there was the amount of people doing the c2c then, unlike now, so at that time, I would not of been the wiser, just plodding away the miles without regard.

(c) I always take a radio, which is a good thing or not so good thing. The good thing is music, news updates or most important weather forecast. Is it a bad thing, to know that bad weather is on the way, putting you off or do you just battle on. I suppose, if you had booked up and paid up the accommodation, then that is hard luck or if you are camping, you just chicken out like I did. I never used to bother with the radio years ago and it's only on the last three crossing, I've took a radio.

May is generally a good settled month, but remember, April this year and that was a good month for walking coast to coast, but then again, it could of snowed instead. That is the gamble with the British weather, it's fickle. It's funny when I started the coast to coast in August, this year, that it was hot and dry from Robin Hood's Bay to Reeth, in fact too hot for walking. I remember when I was on Glaisdale Rigg, when a group of c2c walkers coming from west to east, saying that their didn't have a single drop of rain from St. Bees, only a hour of rain in Keld.

The key factor to walking long distance, is getting plenty of training done before hand and I'm sure you would of that in the Lakes and that is plenty of up's and down's with a loaded rucksack. I can do that training on the coastal section between Whitby and Saltburn, which I will be doing once the longer days arrive.

Knee pain, I have a few of them over the years and now use a pair of trekking poles. Good for heavy loads and not so good getting over stiles.

I'm sure you will enjoy the c2c next time as much as I have over the past 20 years.

I think it's probably the coast to coast is a such a wonderful varied walk, it's got everything. I suppose most walkers could say, it's a challenge and is a great social factor. I've met some lovely people, however, I met some strange people too.

In reality, you have to take whatever is thrown at you as regards the British weather. Moments I remember include ..

The February floods in Wensleydale/Swaledale that wrecked Reeth.

March 9th when incessant rain peltd down all day turning every footpath into a river.

The St Georges day when snow blocked the Lakes and the Dales requiring walkers to be airlifted off the hills.

The gales of May that blew down vast numbers of trees along the route. The raging fires this May after weeks of dry weather

The storms of June 2005 that devastated the western moors. 57 bridges destroyed, Helmsley under water and a wall of water rushing down Bilsdale

The prolonged dry spell of summer 1976 when the whole of the north of England was closed to walkers. I spent almost every day at access points having to stop walkers crossing the moors. Even the accommodation providers only accepted walkers for the first night after closure then refused to accept those who tried to continue covertly.

The 7 inches of rain on September 17th 1976. The Leven burst its banks causing devastating flooding.

So, You can never rely on the conditions ... except that usually June is warmer than December!!

I remember, me and my mate cycling from Harwich to Middlesbrough via Norwich, King's Lynn, Lincoln and York. That was when we were cycling from Hunstanston to Holbeach and encountered a gentle topical shower, lasting only about hour. Later on, my mate rang his Mum back in Teesside and heard the news, that Teesside had a month's down pour of torrential rain, the same day. It was only, when we got to York, that the River Ouse burst it's banks and the first time, I had seen the flood gates in operation. A sight to see. That was August 2002.

I don't record any records.
Thats a deal.....

I thought the new editions, although only a few, were incentive enough for you to leave a comment or twenty.
So don't be shy.
I was actually able to catch up with a chap I met on route via the blog.
Chap called Tom.
He was at Black Sail. and appears in the Black Sail vidjo.
Nice bloke.

RT,
I did the same (caught up with someone I met on my walk) through my blog.
I met him while going under the bridge at Catterick bridge, and mentioned him in my blog, as "an enthusiastic Australian". He left a nice comment "from the mad Aussie, at Catterick".

Well, we did it! And I owe our success, in part, to your blog. I read and re-read it and I learned some things that helped us to be better prepared. I thank you for sharing your experience!

My 13 yr old daughter, Lauren, and I completed the walk in 16 days. I know that sounds ridiculously slow to most of the readers on this forum but I'm not embarrassed. We've never done a walk before and we live on a flat island with no way to train for the Lake District. (By the way, my British friend, those are MOUNTAINS, they are not hills.) Considering our circumstances, we had an enormous success.

Please feel free to share our adventure on our blog:

www.walkmyfatass.blogspot.com

Thanks again....I'm already planning the next one.

I doubt you will have learned much from my blog...other than I am a stupid person, and I have a Dave.
But thank you for your kind words.
I shall go and have a read of your blog later.
WELL DONE to you and to Lauren.
Next year you can come with me and Dave and we will show you how to do it with only the aid of piece of string and a knitting needle.
Oh and a map or twenty.

OKAY you may all now depart and checkout the now FINISHED blog.
I may even turn it into a book. I won't charge extra for signed copies. I may even give discounts to all who can prove they have walked the walked. Unless they come from Yorkshire...then a prenium is required.

Happy Walking.
Now where did I leave my boots?

Well RT.
My best viewed blog comes in at a current 996 views of the Spine Race in January this year, so not too bad for 2 months. However I don't really expect many more views until the race comes around again next year.
Bet you are getting exited as your next crossing looms closer and closer.
Dave.

Indeed Dave. Indeed.
Mrs RT is getting sick to the back teeth.
Have got quite a bit of interest going too, locally.
Our Village mag is publishing my requst for donations, with a small editorial.
My works newsletter is doing a piece about my, and both are publishing my Just Giving site address.
Doing well so far. £330 to Cancer Research UK.Still got 12 weeks before I go.
Only one cloud on the horozon. My walking buddy Dave is currently between employers and may not be able to make it, but we keep everything crossed. Mrs RT aint gonna like letting me out onto an unsuspecting population alone.

Just gonna hijack the thread for a shameless plug, if you don't mind.

www.justgiving.com/paultinkercoast2coast2013

Might even take a crack at rhe South Uplands in a couple of years. That seems to be Coast to coast too.
I can se ahabit forming here.

I did. But it will have to be in a more comfortable time frame. And include B&B and transfers of baggage.
She hasn't been able to take part in my Up hill expeds when we go to the Lakes, due to shortness of breath after all the treatments she had for her Braest Cancer,so we may be a few years away from that yet. But we live in hope.
She can manage the flat bits round Buttermere and such like, but long up hill ascents are not at this time something she is comfortable with.
I'll have to make do with Dave, my trusty manservant for now.
