The truth is, she asked to come with me. She WANTS to go and is excited about it but we live on a very small, flat island. To walk by the same thing day after day without variation gets boring no matter how much one enjoys walking.

A couple days after posting my comment, we walked 6 miles. She wore her ipod and I had difficulty keeping up w/her pace! At 13, she's already 5'7" and her legs are longer than mine. She was fast!

We're planning a trip off the rock and to the mainland next weekend to do some walking in a different place, which should be more fun. I'm not worried about her - she's dedicated to our adventure and getting more and more excited as the time gets closer.

I was just curious if the mom of the 6 and 8 yr old kids had done any sort of training w/them? What a great story!

Thanks to all for your responses/suggestions.

BigMamma,
How many days are you planning to take on the route.
The average is around 12 days at 16 miles a day.
Through the Lakes it tougher going with much ascent and descent, some of it very steep.
You don't make it clear whether you and your daughter have previous experience, but in preparation for the C2C, one would hope to have at least several walks of well over 12 miles completed and preferably over 16 miles.
Many greatly under estimate this route and flounder before making it through the Lake District, due to poor preparation.
June is not far away now, I would make an extra special effort to increase regular walking mileage, to avoid the long trip over here ending in disappointment.
I'm not trying to be a killjoy, I'm just hoping you have a really amazing experience and don't become yet another abandonment statistic.
Dave.

Thanks Dave for the advice. Your point is well taken.

We are first time walkers and we're planning to do the walk in 19 days. We're spending two nights in Shap (to recover from the Lake District) and two nights in Osmotherly (just to give us another respite).

Our longest days will be 14 miles and we two of those, back to back...I think between Keld and Reeth. Most of our other days are 10 to 12.

We leave in 9 1/2 weeks and believe me, I'm watching the days tick away faster than I'd like. Our longest walk is 7 miles thus far but we're planning for 9 today. Once we can walk 10 miles, two days in a row, then I'll be more confident about our chances for success.

Thanks again for your advice and encouragement!
