That is a good idea. I have been carrying a 3" magnifying glass in my pocket on my last couple of long distance walks as it was less likely to get broken than my glasses. A cheap pair of glasses that magnify a bit more, that I could hang around my neck, could be even better. I used to use the magnifying bit in the end of the compass but it was a bit too small to really help much!

That bit about hanging them round your neck is good because they are no use whatever when you leave them on a wall, as I did on my first C2C crossing!.

I would recommend just taking the footprint maps as the walk is so well signposted and eroded it's difficult to get lost apart from the farmland

I think the area between Lambley and Greenhead would be difficult to navigate without a map .... it's bad enough with one! Also useful if you wander off-piste (as in mist) or need to find a detour for some reason.

The bit through the Kielder Forest wasn't easy to navigate as they had cut down acres of trees when I did it. I should have been in the middle of the forest but I was in open land with tree roots and branches everywhere. No doubt the path will be more distinct now. However "don't think you're on the right road just because it’s a well-beaten path".
