Hello everyone, this is my first time on here.
Starting at 12.00 noon on the 17th of march a friend and myself are going to attempt the c2c in 5 days, which gives usuntil 12.00 noon on thursday the 22nd. We are doing this to raise money for sports relief.
I would appriciate any advise, what to expect, is the route easy enough to follow using the 3rd edition coast to coast book. I am also struggling to find anywhere to put our sleeping bags down (without using b&b's or taking a tent after richmond.
thanks for your time

Hi, welcome. Not sure which guide book you mean when you say 3rd edition, but although that will probably be invaluable you also need to have maps/compass. The route is not waymarked throughout as it is not a national trail, the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks being particularly short of signs. If you take OS maps you need about 8 I think, but at the very least you probably need the Harveys strip maps.

Can't help too much with the camping as we stayed in B&Bs but I think you can camp at the Lion Inn, Blakey Ridge. Also Lovesome Hill farm just past Danby Wiske. Others will be able to help more with this. Good luck.

Large notice on the gate of the Lion Inn stating that camping is not allowed. This is to deter groups from the northern cities who arrive and cause problems for genuine walkers. Absolutely no problems if you are doing the C to C, they will readily let you camp overnight.

Wild camping in March is not generally a problem (if that is what you are after). There is camping at Littlebeck (the farm after you leave the main road). You will pass others and some farmers will let you pitch in a field for a nominal charge.

As SS states, signs for the actual walk are few and far between (the councils cannot support private walks as it would start a landslide of requests for other private walks to be signposted)and AW's estate are generally unwilling to help. With decent maps you won't experience many problems providing you have sound navigational skills.

It continues to baffle me why this route has not become a National Trail, as it has got be the most poular.

It might have something to do with the busy road crossing just before the Bluebell Inn.If it was a National Trail the authorities would be responsible for walkers safety and be forced to build a bridge over this road. The cost could be in excess of £5 million.I think there are also access problems in some places and these would have to be resolved before the walk could become a NT.

Had AW initially sought to consult with the powers that be over his route, it could well have been a NT by now!

Unfortunately, it is not feasible for everyone who creates a private walk, without consultation, to expect it to be adopted and maintained at the public expense!

Stuhumbear

Assuming that you are starting at noon on the 17th and finishing just before noon on the 22nd you will have completed a sub 5 day crossing. Please let us know how you get on.

Your efforts towards this end are commendable as you appear to have planned, organised it and are ready to start it without the brouhaha some others find necessary.

As you will see from the other thread, some are making such as fuss about their own walk that will they will automatically view you as an armchair walker merely being disrespectful to their own efforts, especially as you are undertaking it so close to the the other one.

Good luck

(Wait now for the posts claiming that it is me posting under another name)

Remember it isn't The Coast to Coast, but a Coast to coast.
Who needs signs when you have so many books, maps and websites such as this. Keep it the way it is and find your way....your way.

Philosophey..........my way.
