Yet another dig, pathetic!

There is an attitude, which I confess to agreeing with, that once walks enter uncultivated land then those taking part should both have a map and be able to use it. By all means signpost a path when it leaves a metalled road (which is a legal requirement anyway) or if it is part of a short family orientated walk, but signposts on open moors and fells are an unnecessary eyesore.

As your schedule looks extremely similar to mine last summer,I camped at the following locations each night:
1st night: Wild camp 1 mile above Seatoller after the path bears away from the road.
2nd night: Shap,New Ing Lodge in main street £5/night.
3rd night: Keld,Park Lodge £5/night.
4th night: Swan Inn,Danby Wiske pub garden (excellent).£5/night
5th night: Wild camp 1 mile above Glaisdale just before fenced farmland started.
Hope you've got your head torch's packed,as you'll probably have two hours walking in the dark each day!

thank you for the advise everyone. We are still trying to deside where the best places to get some shut eye are. We change our mind everyday. Your schedule Alan F looks good. I am sure the weather will have a bit to say about were we will stay at this time of year.
Only 14 days to go, just want to get stuck into it now.

Can anyone tell me is it best to use AW c2c book with a map or are there other books out there that are better than AW's.

I'm not one for unnecessary detail and have only ever used the Footprint guides which give adequate detail and are light, though it's a good idea to go over the route on a mapping site such as 'walkhighlands' (O/S maps)
GoogleEarth (or other satellite route-plotting sites) are invaluable tools also,

Ignore any negative comments, we are a friendly helpful lot on here (mostly) feel free to discuss your plans and seek advise, however far ahead of your actual crossing.
In my case going West to East on my 5 day schedule I camped as follows:-
1st night... Just beyond Ruthwaite Lodge in Grisedale.
2nd .. A couple of miles beyong Sunbiggin tarn next to
a wall, but before Bents Farm.
3rd night was B&B in Richmond after a bad very wet day and
nowhere to pitch at Midnight.
4th night was an emegency 90 minutes in my tent just beyond Round Hill on the Rosedale Railway after Claybank Top but before Blowarth Crossing. Actually Blowarth Crossing is a very good spot for a wild camp although exposed if conditions are bad.

Hi,
I have the Alfred Wainright, Terry Marsh, Henry Steadman and the Martin Wainwright guides, and the Harvy strip maps.
I found the Harvey strip maps not very good.
The Steadman doesn't have maps relying on illustrations instead, is very detailed with useful hints and tips.
However of the lot, I prefer the Martin Wainwright book with it's 1:25,000 OS maps.

We had bought the Terry Marsh (Cicerone)guide as we'd used his guide for the Dales Way and found it good. We'd also borrowed the Martin Wainwright book from the library before going and copied a few pages. In hindsight his book was probably better because of the larger maps and also we found in the Terry Marsh guide the maps were often not on the same page as the text relating to it - not helpful when pouring with rain and something you don't always think aobut beforehand!

If you need shelter around Blowath and don't mind a short detour some derelict buildings at 632 010 afford a degree of respite from the wind/rain Alternatively, the small ravine around the bridleway bridge, has some grassy areas with the benefit of safe water from the Dove. The trees a short distance further on are also useful in bad weather. You can rejoin the route by using the footpath that starts near the parking area just beyond Elm House.
