Swang is one of the many words local to the Moors. It means a waterlogged channel of peat, normally associated with an old river channel ..... then there are Griffs and Sikes and ....

Try and avoid slacks as well. Flat boggy areas (as opposed to swangs which are quite restrictive in size)


As for names, it takes a lot to beat Crumbleclive (on the River Esk) or Cumboots (Combeboots) beneath Reasty Bank above Hackness.

The Cock Lake/Cock Lek is a long standing error which stretches back many years. It is a harmless error that only affects the black grouse who won't know where to perform their courtship dances. The current problems revolve around mistakes wherein certain features are incorrectly assigned. A different type of problem altogether.

Private land has been designated as open access (including houses) and private woodland has been designated as Forestry Commission land ..... amongst others.
