Somebody talk me thru' the 3 Peaks Challenge (Yorkshire)
I see that it is about 42 km in 12 hrs, which is quite do-able along the flat, but then we must consider the speed loss of the climbs (1'900m total ?) which really makes it a suitable course only for an SAS wannabe.
I have mapped out a course near here I would call a 2 Peak Challenge, i.e., 31 km with 1'900 m total height gain, but there ain't no way I could do it. I can only point my friend in the general direction an say "Go to it".
How would one train for the 3 Peaks Challenge in realistic terms, starting from a good C2C in 12 days fitness level?

we use to do the Three Peaks ( about 25miles)in under 12 hours , with no training. also the Lyke Wake Walk ( 40miles over the North York Moors)in 14 or 15 hours. again with no training. some of the walkers were just going with us on a one off.

Thanks for the comments lads. However, they raise a question in my mind.....if the 3PC is so easy, why all the hype about it? Why do people hold it in so much awe?

The relative ease of it is part of the reason for all the hype, as much of the hype is by those who you wouldn't otherwise consider to be walkers slogging round the route to raise money for charity. However, often these are not all that well prepared and are relying on the help of other walkers or the event organisers, who provide regular refreshments and the like. If you're doing it by yourself, whilst it isn't excessively challenging, it certainly isn't "easy".

I should imagine that at this moment the Black Moss is pretty well impassable after all the rain ?

If you have a bit of choice as to when you do the Three Peaks, and want an enjoyable walk rather than an extended conga line, avoid a sunny weekend - there's likely to be many hundreds of others out, and particular spots get very busy. The path up Ingleborough is probably the worst, as the steepest section is pretty much single file and passing others isn't always easy (or even possible when people aren't courteous enough to step aside for faster walkers).
