I just Google them, Ozzie. Often just throwing in a specific keyword like 'St Bee's' helps: rather than the more generic terms like C2C diary. I actually wondered if you might have been the Aussies in the journal list above...? Regardless: how was your trip this time? Did you do different things or follow a similar route to last year's? What was better about the walk the second time? Would you go a third time? (Sorry: I'm nosey!) IP: Logged |

Hi Leki or should we say G'day or How yer goin' or whateverWe don't think being interested can be interpreted as being nosy! We found the second time on the C2C just as interesting as the first. Conditions were quite different on many days (not nearly as wet and no gale force winds)and we found we had more time to look at surroundings the second time round. This year we still got lost but at least we strayed in different places and not as severely as in 2004. We did take a somewhat different route from last year - we took three days from Patterdale to Kirkby Stephen (Patterdale to Bampton, Bampton to Orton and Orton to Kirkby Stephen) and found this to be a great alternative - even though one of our only two wet days was from Orton to Kirkby Stephen. We also went over the top old-lead-mines route to Reeth. We found this quite a tiring day and the books (especially Stedman whose maths did not quite add when you compared his total time to the total of the sections) did not prepare us very well. It was, however, fascinating. We would not say it was better than the Swale route but different - both were great! We are in fact planning to walk a third time - in 2007. Our son, who is based in London, expressed an interest in doing such a walk - he has walked in Kashmir and Nepal -and we jumped at the chance. We only hope that our old bones do not give up on us in the meantime. If we can now be nosy - were you the Aussies who stayed at Newlands House? IP: Logged |

Tracking us, uh, Ozzie? Thanks for the second time around clarification. It's clear to me -- and from another little thing that Oldun said after his walk -- (Where ARE you Oldun? Are you well? Happy? Walking? I miss you!) -- that you are so busy the first time round, watching the map, watching your feet, worrying that you didn't forget your walking pole at the last stop, etc -- that you actually don't stop enough the first time you do the walk. You literally don't lift your head, look around, breathe in every step. Which, I think I was aware was potentially a problem the first time, and not knowing the route, or our limitations well enough meant that, even tho' we took a rest day, walked sensibly, etc, I still felt at the end we'd gone too fast: that we need to stop more enroute, during each day -- and smell the metaphorical roses, so to speak. Which is why some of us feel the need to do the C2C at least twice. To relax and enjoy it. As for Newlands: some of our group were at Newlands. We weren't. But we were just down the road. And we ate at The Jet Miners Inn that night in Great Broughton and vote it the BEST Pub Food on the C2C by far. And cheap! 2 courses for 5.95! The Yorkshire pudding was exceptional. As were the stuffed mushrooms entree. The place was packed and the service was exceptional. Well done, Jet Miners Inn. IP: Logged |

Thanks, Tom, for yours. You are a darling. Your journal is up there with the best and among the best for photos. Also, it is one of the few Mr Leki read before setting out. As he remembers it (and he still sprouts off to anyone about reading it, and the walk!) you and he were the sensible ones! -- as in his memory you ate steak and ale pie or curry non-stop from west to east. You didn't. He did. He misremembers. (As usual.) IP: Logged |

Oh, go for it, LoneWalker -- that's a great idea. Those links would be really useful put in a readily accessible place. And they're just links. No one owns copyright to links so you can do that with ease, I imagine. Tho' you're going to have to check them occasionnaly, I suppose, to make sure they are still 'live', etc. All the best with it. That's a great idea. IP: Logged |

I see that you are still a prolific writer. Since doing the C2C I have wandered around the Cape of South Africa following the whales; done a few walks in my area (Switzerland); wandered around middle England, and have done the West Highland Way. Now planning for the Cleveland Way next Spring. I use the word wandering specifically, as I am now enjoying walking, rather than trying to start like a bomb and go eyeballs out, wondering if I am going to beat a record or lose my way. More often than not I succeed in losing my way, no matter how well I plan things. But the enjoyment now is in trying to find out where the hell I am, and then finding my way across country to my destination; sometimes coming upon the destination from the most unexpected places, or seeing my destination from the most inaccessible vantage point. Getting my gear ready now for winter walking and snowshoeing in the Jura. When it snows it is beautiful up there with a lot of small wild life. Seems to be a problem here now, as global warming has driven the wolves and bears back to Switzerland; but I hope, not as far as the Jura.
