Hello,

Not being from England, I am not sure about the "etiquette" of tipping at bed & breakfasts, inns, etc. My inclination is not to, unless an exceptional service is rendered, such as picking up and dropping off from Clay Bank Top, for example.

Any thoughts?

K

Oldun's succinct reply is correct.

Offer payment for additional help - like a lift to the pub or back to the Trail, or laundry. Almost always your offer will be refused, but if you really feel you want to leave a tip I'm sure you'll find a discreet way to do so before departing.

Recommending good B&Bs on this site and others is a way of showing your appreciation.

Have a good trip!

Its not really a custom to tip the owners of a bed and breakfast establishments. Some might even feel insulted. If someone gives you a lift to the pub, or picks you up from a certain point, they are doing it for a reason,ie,to get one step ahead of the competition and get your business. Also it is far more economical to give someone a lift to the pub than slaving away for two hours cooking an evening meal for one person.

If the owner has employees it would be be correct etiquette to give them a tip,but don't go tipping barmen in pubs, only tip the table waiter in a proper restaurant.

Just to reinforce the other replies, as an native I would usually tip in a restaurant (if the service merited it) and I would possibly round up the fare for a taxi ride. Other than that England really hasn't got a tipping culture.

I don't tip in restaurants, well I wouldn't if I used restaurants, as it only encourages the wealthy restaurant owners to avoid paying their staff a decent wage.
As a taxi driver for a year I certainly didn't object to tips but they rarely amounted to more than several pounds a day, not enough to make it into a decent wage, hence the large turnover in drivers and me now doing something a bit more lucrative and worthwhile.

Never never tip in a B&B - as Tonyk says, it would probably be taken as an insult. Basically you don't tip the owner, only his/her junior staff. In a pub you might leave a tip for waiting staff if your food has been brought to the table by youthful (teenage) staff. Otherwise not.
