I stopped at Skiddaw House for a breather on day two of my Cumbria Way walk last week. And was invited in for a cup of tea, by one of a group of people who are gradualy doing it up with the plan of opening it up again next year but as an independant hostel. A lot of work is being undertaken, including refitting out the mountain refuge there. If you are passing, call in and you may get a cup of tea or if your lucky an overnight stay.

I was lucky enough to be invited in for a cuppa about ten years ago, just after I had moved up here. I made friends with the then warden and have had the privilege of spending many a fine hour/night there. Sk House is a very special place - almost magical, situated where it is in the middle of nowhere on top of tree-topped rise. The people you met were all volunteers. Friends of Skiddaw House is a group who are trying to keep the place open at their own expese financial and time. I am hoping to join them soon. Who knows, maybe I might see you up there one day. B
