Blimey !I did the Pennine Way 20 years ago, and am currently planning Lands End/John O Groats for sometime in the next couple of years, which may cover the "Way" again. But I see the YHA is planning on closing Bellingham, Greenhead, Alston, Earby and Keld (among others). Am I the only one who thinks this will leave some pretty big gaps in the logical accommodation sequence for us 15 mile-a-day mortals ? Keld is a particularly big loss, given that it is the crossroads with the Coast to Coast..... Cheers Mark Rushton IP: Logged |

Alston and Bellingham aren't too much of a problem as they are towns with ample accomadation but loosing Keld and Greenhead will be a blow.Whilst Greenhead might not be viable in a commercial sense I cannot believe that Keld cannot make a profit. It might make sense for people to mix camping with hostels as Sherpa will transport the tent from site to site. IP: Logged |

Yes sad times indeed. At least 2 of the B&B's I stayed at were planning on moving/closing as they were at retirement age so it is happening across the board I think.Sad day when we will all have to use taxi's to get to accommodation several miles off route. regards Justin IP: Logged |

Hi,I'm new to this forum. Here is a suggestion I've being making in a few other places eg hostelling internet discussion groups etc. It relates to trying to do something to save some of the hostels that the YHA are planning to close - counting the ones announced last year, it actually amounts to 50 hostels - around 1/4 of the whole network! I'm trying to encourage as many people as possible to try to visit these hostels sometime before they close to enjoy them and take digital photos. The photos and any text could be put up on the internet eg "unofficial websites" for the closing hostels. If this sort of grass roots publicity does improve overnights significantly at these places this may make it harder for the YHA to justify closing them. In any case I think anyone who did take part might be glad that they managed to stay in some of these great places that we will never see again. At present, there are two websites on the hostel closures (and another one is planned). Dave Plummer's website is at: http://www.daveplummer.co.uk/hostels/closures/index.htm And I've just started putting together my own website, and would welcome either photos - I'm mainly interested in evocative, photogenic pictures of the hostel itself or nice walks, cycles etc in the area rather than happy group photos - or else descriptive text. My "embryonic" website is at http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/pennyswebs/hostelclosures/ [This message has been edited by Hermoine (edited 17 February 2006).] IP: Logged |

Sherpa will be making a bid to acquire Keld YHA when it comes up for sale. So with luck there will still be accommodation for walkers in Keld.IP: Logged |

Brilliant! I do hope you are sucessful. That's exactly the sort of outcome that we should be looking for all the hostels that YHA are selling. IP: Logged |

I can't find any definitive answers as to which hostels are closing and when they are closing. YHA Booking Bureau told me the Byrness is "closing for good" so I had to book the Byrness Hotel for 11 August. Then I see the comment in the other thread that a laster booking there has been accepted and the YHA website says that all hostels will be open until a date in October. I'm not too worried, as I've got accommodation booked all the way and the mixture of hotels, B&Bs, guest houses and Youth Hostels should offer some variety at least. I will need to do some homework about local shops where accommodations won't be sending me out with a packed lunch, and local eateries near the self-catering only hostels. My walk should be pleasant, spread over 20 days with mileages: 15, 11, 16, 11, 12, 15, 14, 14, 12, 14, 19, 13, 16, 4, 18, 7, 16, 16, 11, 17. Eek, there's still plenty of long days in there! But nothing over 20 which is good.IP: Logged |

Hi Tom,The waiting is terrible isn't it? I did the PW last year and couldn't wait. Doing the WHWay this year in June and can't wait for that either! Out of interest what day is your 4 mile? I mean where along the route is it? You have done well to limit your mileage to "mere mortal" levels, you will be happier for it I am sure. Regards and good luck Justin IP: Logged |

Looking at the mileage figures id say that 4 mile day looks like Garigill to Alston.

You are right I think Andy - Tom will have a lie in and be in Alston just as the pubs open!Justin IP: Logged |

Yes, quite correct - Garrigill to Alston. No rest days, but certainly some "easier" days.IP: Logged |
